Sony has revealed a previously unmentioned feature of the PS5 Pro, while confirming that up to 50 games will be enhanced at launch.

The PS5 Pro may have been leaked months before it was officially announced but not everything was known about it before its reveal and even now it seems there are additional features that Sony didn’t mention at first.

A new interview from Japan reveals that the upgrade console has a feature called Image Quality Boost, which allows you to upscale PlayStation 4 games without using the main PSSR feature. This is apparently an option that can be switched on and off, at your discretion.

No examples are given of how exactly it works but it shows that PlayStation 4 games will also benefit from enhancements straight out the box, along with a promised 40 to 50 PlayStation 5 games.

The interview on 4Gamer is with Senior Principal Product Manager Toshi Aoki and covers a number of topics, including how the previously announced Game Boost feature will work for PlayStation 5 games that aren’t specifically enhanced for PS5 Pro.

The console will be able to dynamically increase the resolution, but it’ll only be able to improve the frame rate if it’s already unlocked. For many PlayStation games it’s been common to lock it at 30fps but unlocked frame rates have become more prevalent in recent years, in hindsight perhaps because developers knew the PS5 Pro was coming.

Aoki confirms that PlayStation VR2 titles will also benefit from unlocked frame rates but adds, according to a translation on ResetEra, that Sony is considering ‘whether we can do something by linking PSSR better on PlayStation VR2.’

In terms of games that specifically support the console, Sony has only announced around a dozen so far, but Aoki suggests that by launch, on November 7, around 40 to 50 titles will be enhanced, across both first and third party titles.

No list is provided of what they are, but it seems there’ll be far more than implied by the short sizzle real at the end of the announcement trailer.

In the future, all Sony published games can be expected to be PS5 Pro enhanced at launch, with many third party titles also likely to advertise the feature.

The PS5 Pro remains controversial because of its price of £699.99, but it is only intended for hardcore fans and, like the PS4 Pro before it, is expected to account for only a small proportion of overall PlayStation 5 sales going forward.
