It might be a great game but PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade is getting increasingly embarrassing to play in public, and that’s before the new photo mode hits.

There is no doubt that Stellar Blade, from South Korean developer Shift Up, is one of the best action games of the year and one of the most successful. There’s also no doubt that it’s attitude towards women feels worryingly old-fashioned and can be very off-putting at times… and it’s only getting worse.

A new update has been released this week and instead of fixing bugs or adding important new features its priorities are changing the way main character EVE’s boobs jiggle and making sure the wind keeps catching her dress, so you get a glimpse of her panties.

The new features seem to have been purposefully added just ahead of another update that will introduce a photo mode and allow players to take photos of EVE in even more compromising positions.

The official patch notes for the 1.007 update make no reference to the changes, just ‘Visual improvements of conflicts between EVE’s body’ (i.e. stopping clothing from passing through her body).

Nevertheless, their tweet for the update has a before and after shot focused squarely on EVE’s chest, making it clear they know exactly what they’re doing.

Fans of the game have been quick to catalogue the changes in more detail, as you can see from the video below, with some outfits becoming more revealing and the boob physics even more exaggerated.

Most of the online discussion so far has been in favour of the update but by this point most people know what to expect from Shift Up, who have been unrepentant about the game’s portrayal of EVE and the other women in the game.

The weird thing is that in all other respects it’s a perfectly normal action game, with characters rarely referencing what EVE looks like or asking why she’s going into battle wearing a skimpy bikini instead of some kind of battle armour.

EVE herself is mostly cold and robotic, as a cybernetically enhanced super soldier, with very little personality of her own.

There’s not really any overtly sexist dialogue or characters, which almost makes it seem like EVE and the other women have been dropped in from some other game.

Stellar Blade has been very successful, with whispers of DLC, a PC version, and an inevitable sequel. There’s also going to be a crossover with NieR:Automata, which is no surprise as creator Yoko Taro has been very vocal about his admiration for the game and the design of its female characters.

There’s never been any sense that Sony is embarrassed by the game’s portrayal of women, with EVE due to be added as a new character in the family-friendly Astro Bot this autumn.
