A sequel to Alien Isolation has been announced 10 years after the original, with the same director set to return.
While it’s seemed for a long time like a sequel to Alien Isolation was strictly a pipedream, developer Creative Assembly – which is owned by Sega – is officially making it a reality.
In a Twitter post to mark the original game’s tenth anniversary, Alien Isolation creative lead Al Hope thanked players around the world, before casually announcing a sequel is in early development at the studio.
‘On the 10th anniversary, it seems only fitting to let you know that we have heard your distress calls loud and clear,’ the post reads.
When will Alien Isolation 2 be released?
‘Today, I’m delighted to confirm, on behalf of the team, that a sequel to Alien Isolation is in early development. We look forward to sharing more details with you when we’re ready.’
Early development suggests it’ll be at least five years till the game’s ready, which should put it firmly into the next generation of consoles.
Alien Isolation is set 15 years after Ridley Scott’s 1979 film and followed Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda, as she investigates her mother’s disappearance on the Sevastopol space station.
While it was impeccable in terms of scares, presentation, and atmosphere, Alien Isolation was far from perfect – as it became the prime example of a game that was just too long, especially given the insubstantial story and characters.
Will Alien Isolation continue the story of Amanda Ripley?
Considering the key fundamentals were so great though, the announcement of a sequel is certainly welcome – especially as it will presumably capitalise on the power of next generation hardware, if it is in early development.
It’s unclear if this sequel will be a direct follow-up, but the original game (annoyingly) ended on a cliffhanger, so we expect this will pick up Amanda Ripley’s story in some form.
In the years since Alien Isolation, there has been a stack of other Alien games, including Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Aliens: Dark Descent, while a VR game, Alien: Rogue Incursion, is set to be released in December.
None, however, have been published by Sega, who were thought to have lost the licence. It’s possible that the unexpected success of the movie Alien: Romulus may have encouraged both Disney (who now own the franchise) and Sega to make a new deal.
