Shirley Manson, iconic lead singer of the band Garbage, has revealed that she recently underwent major surgery.

The 58-year-old rock star shared the news with her fans on social media, posting a photo from her hospital bed where she flashed a peace sign, her chest hooked up to medical equipment.

Although Manson did not disclose specific details about the procedure, she dramatically captioned the post: ‘She’s alive’

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Shirley appeared in good spirits in the picture.

Later, after returning home, she continued to update fans on her recovery, posting a reflective message alongside a photo with her dog.

‘I’m choosing to remind myself, as I lie here trying to recover from major surgery, that there are still beautiful things in the world,’ she wrote.

She expressed deep gratitude to those who supported her during her recovery, stating, ‘I cling on to their kindness and their thoughtfulness and their care.’ Manson also admitted to spending much of her time in bed ‘doomscrolling.’

Shirley Manson’s rock career has spanned decades, and she remains the powerhouse behind Garbage, a band she co-founded in the early ’90s alongside Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig.

The group rose to fame with hits like Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains, blending alternative rock with electronic elements. The band went on hiatus in 2005 but regrouped two years later, releasing their seventh studio album No Gods No Masters in 2021.

In October 2022, they celebrated their career with a comprehensive Anthology album.

Beyond her music career, Manson has also ventured into acting. In 2008, she appeared as the liquid metal T-1001 Terminator named Catherine Weaver in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Shirley, who was born in Edinburgh to a singer mother, Muriel, and a university lecturer father, John, has been married twice.

Her first marriage to artist Eddie Farrell lasted from 1996 to 2003. In 2010, she married sound engineer Billy Bush in Los Angeles and she continues to live in California with him today.
