Miranda Hart has revealed she is married after meeting ‘her person’ at the age of 49.

The actress and comedian, 51, appeared in BBC sitcoms including Hyperdrive and Not Going Out before her semi-autobiographical sitcom Miranda hit screens in 2009.

It ran for three seasons and several Christmas specials, winning three Royal Television Society awards, four British Comedy Awards and four BAFTA nominations until ending in 2015.

Miranda also appeared as Camilla ‘Chummy’ Fortescue-Cholmondeley-Browne in the BBC drama series Call the Midwife for three years from 2012.

Currently promoting her memoir-cum-self-help manual I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You, Miranda revealed some developments in her private life during an appearance on The One Show on Tuesday night.

‘I got married!’ she declared, as she moved a ring from one of her right fingers to her left.

‘I can now say that someone put a ring on it,’ she added as hosts Alex Jones and Alex Scott applauded and cheered.

‘I got married at 51. It’s just so lovely. I’d written Gary for on screen Miranda, and it wasn’t until I was 49 that I met my person.’

She went on to say she wouldn’t reveal how they met, but that it was detailed in her book.

‘He is my best friend, and we have the best fun and I am thrilled to be a young bride at 51!’ she added.

Speaking about meeting her now husband during the pandemic and while also battling a chronic illness, Miranda said she hadn’t wanted to ‘do life on my own anymore’.

‘The fact I could meet somebody isn’t a rom-com story, but it is hope that things really can change,’ she explained.

Miranda’s announcement comes after she recently teased that her book would share details of her love life, while also being spotted wearing a wedding band in recent photos and videos posted on social media.

Speaking about battling her chronic illness – which she shared was Lyme disease – Miranda explained on the BBC programme how she’s faced ‘an unpleasant few years’.

‘I’ve mainly been in bed or housebound with chronic illness. It’s been a tough few years, which my book is charting. But it hasn’t been all doom and gloom- there has also been some joy as well,’ she said.

However, she did say: ‘One you’ve been in bed housebound with a chronic illness and fatigue that takes a long time to be diagnosed, you miss life a lot.’

‘Despite the suffering it came from, I am living a life of joy, meaning and fulfilment that I wasn’t before.’

‘I’ve got my best friend to do life with and it’s wonderful and I’m also utterly thrilled to be back in teleland and have a book out.’

‘Thanks so much for all your support,’ she added, before high-fiving her husband, whose hand was seen moving into the shot.

‘Oh oh EXCLUSIVE! His hand,’ she teased.

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks.

A circular or oval shape rash around a tick bite can be an early symptom of Lyme disease in some people.

The rash can appear up to three months after being bitten by an infected tick, but usually appears within one to four weeks. It can last for several weeks.

According to the NHS, symptoms include a high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery, headaches, muscle and joint pain and tiredness and loss of energy.

One of the main treatments for those with the disease is a course of antibiotics.

Some people who are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease continue to have symptoms, like tiredness, aches and loss of energy, that can last for years.

In August Miranda revealed she had had been experiencing feelings of ‘shame’ in recent years.

Wearing a T-shirt that read ‘Proud’ and holding her book, she at first joked she had ‘lost all of the midlife weight that was lumped on in the last three years’.

‘I haven’t,’ she whispered before pointing to the title of her book.

‘But can I just say I’m actually really quite proud of the fact that I’ve dismantled quite a lot of shame about my weight gain, not that because I don’t think bigger is beautiful, but because it isn’t quite me and I feel really uncomfortable and it’s one of the things I talk about in there,’ she added.

Miranda is streaming on BBC iPlayer. The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
