Billy Monger, who starred on the BBC series Celebrity Race Across The World, has been banned from driving after admitting to ‘driving without due care’.

The racing driver, who has previously competed in the F4 British Championship, had to have both of his legs amputated in 2017 after he was involved in a collision. The next year, he was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award.

The 25-year-old – who’s a Formula 1 commentator for Channel 4 – took part in the inaugural celebrity edition of Race Across The World in 2023 with his sister Bonny, and is currently training for an Ironman race.

In January, Monger was involved in a crash in Surrey when he lost control of his Toyota while speeding, hit three parked cars and crashed into a garden wall.

The pundit pleaded guilty at Guildford Magistrates Court to driving without due care and attention.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Surrey Police said: ‘A man has pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention after crashing into three parked cars in Limpsfield earlier this year.

‘Billy Monger, 25 (5/5/1999), of Stan Hill, Charlwood, #Horley, was driving a black Toyota Supra when he was involved in the collision in Snatts Hill around 11.55pm on 19 January 2024.

‘Monger was driving along the 30mph road when he collided with a Volkswagen Lupo, a Volkswagen Golf and a Citroen C, causing damage to all three cars. Damage was also caused to a lamp post and a hedge and a wall in the front garden of a nearby property.

‘He was disqualified from driving for a total of 49 days and was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £2,694.’

Surrey Police also shared a statement from Rick Scholey, supervisor for the Road Traffic Collision Team, which investigated the case.

His statement read: ‘Monger was not paying attention when he lost control of his car which resulted in him colliding with three parked cars, causing significant damage to the vehicles before then colliding with a hedge and wall belonging to a nearby house.

‘Thankfully, no one was in the road at the time otherwise this could have had far more serious consequences.’

Monger’s lawyer, Duncan Jones, told the court that the accident was ‘caused by excessive speed and Mr Monger accepts that he drove without due care and attention and his lapse was driving too fast around the bend’, the Daily Mail reported.

Jones continued: ‘Mr Monger wants to make it clear that he does not want to get special treatment, but the impact of a disqualification for a young man with his disability is a relevant consideration for the court.’

The lawyer stressed that the TV star has ‘no previous convictions and has shown remorse by his guilty plea’, emphasising that he ‘takes full responsibility’ for the accident.

The publication claimed that Monger visited the residential property where the accident took place to hear the concerns of the people who owned the vehicles that he drove into, and that insurance covered the damage that was caused.

The Mail reported the statement made by Bench Chair Ann Whelan, who told Monger that ‘from this moment in time you are a disqualified driver and cannot drive’. If you do so it is a serious offence you could go to prison for’.

According to the outlet, Monger confirmed to Surrey Police that he was the driver when he reported the crash the next morning, having been in the car with a female passenger.
