Almost one month before Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked is due to open in theatres, fans have slammed a promotional poster for looking ‘cheap’ and ‘bad’.

The uproar came earlier this week after a poster of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo attempting to recreate the iconic 2003 poster for the theatre how, featured a few unfavourable changes.

Showing Cynthia, 37, with her black hat on, long dark hair swept over her shoulder and green lipstick to compliment her green skin, Ariana, 32, looks to be whispering in the ear of the star while wearing a tiara

It’s a slightly different approach from the original poster, which shows Elphaba with her face covered by her hat and a smirk complete with bright red lipstick, while Glinda whispers in her ear while wearing an all-white outfit.

Unlike the original poster, Cynthia does not appear to be smirking, and her face is on full display.

It’s caused upset among fans, who have taken to social media with their grievances, and some have even’ fixed’ the poster to what they think it should look like.

X user amandagails wrote: ‘This movie has the potential to be the ugliest movie ever created. how do you mess up the wicked poster this bad.’

‘I’m not the best editor but made this to feel better about the Wicked poster,’ another X user, Alyssa_ragni said while sharing an image of an edited version of the poster.

Wulfsimmer added: ‘Trailer wasn’t that bad albeit washed out but I hate how downgraded the smirk is in the poster lowkey.’

‘It looks awful. Like a stare at the camera moment from the office. Like a complete mockery of the original smirk / feel of the original poster. Almost like a shot from a cheep early 2000s disney show,’ Firebison said on Reddit.
