Rylan Clark has finally explained why his voice sounds so different after causing a stir with some recent changes.

The TV presenter welcomed fans to ask him any of their burning questions for a YouTube video, and they certainly took advantage of the offer.

The question ‘Why have you started talking differently?’ was posed to the star, and Rylan felt ready to speak his truth.

Before letting out an exasperated sigh about the queries, the 35-year-old said he needed to clear things up.

‘So at work, I’m a bit more like “Hi, I’m Rylan”,’ he began. While doing an impression of himself, Rylan adopted a higher-pitched voice. This is the sound people have become accustomed to hearing when he fronts Dating Naked UK or presents his BBC Radio 2 show.

Rylan explained that when he’s relaxed in a non-work environment, then he tends to adopt a lower tone: ‘When I’m at home, I’m a little bit lower. So sometimes whenever I do a video at home, and I’m wearing a tracksuit then it’s like a normal voice.’

This comes after a video he posted introducing his new series, Air Rylan, in which he interviews celebrities on a replica aeroplane, led to voice comments.

‘Errrmmm why is your voice so deep now?’ asked Jojo_and_Beth_xx. The observation was liked hundreds of times.

At the time, Rylan responded: ‘I forgot when filming the vid to put on my work voice. Sorry x.’

When the fan apologised and clarified she wasn’t trying to be nasty, Rylan reassured her that he hadn’t taken offence. ‘I know! I’m being serious forgot to put my Rylan voice on lol,’ he typed.

Once he’d fully clarified that he uses different voices depending on the situation, Rylan moved on to his love life.

He informed viewers that he was ‘very single’ but didn’t mind his current relationship status.

‘I’m pretty content on my own. I’m a busy boy,’ he explained. Rylan added that he enjoys not having to answer someone asking where he is.

He also shot down rumours his friendship with Rob Rinder could be something more.

‘People thought we were dating, thought we were together, and there’s nothing wrong with that thought, but we’re not – we’re just friends. We’re like a married couple, we row all the time and don’t have sex. He’s very much a part of my life, I speak to him most days,’ he summarised.

Celebrities who’ve changed their voice

Rylan Clark isn’t the only celebrity who’s shocked fans by revealing a real voice. Here are the stars who have spoken about why they use different tones and accents…

Paris Hilton

During The Simple Life, Paris Hilton developed an exaggerated character that she played well. She quickly became known for having a high-pitched baby sound, but in recent years, Paris began to speak with her real voice, which is considerably lower.

‘This is my real voice, that was a character,’ Paris told Alison Hammond during a 2023 interview.

‘I am not a dumb blonde, people – I am just good at playing it. After The Simple Life, I got stuck in playing that role.’

Paris has been campaigning for improving child welfare protection after experiencing abuse at boarding school. She has been using her real voice to discuss the more serious matters.

Ariana Grande

Singer Ariana Grande often uses a sexy, breathy voice when speaking, but can also transition into a more natural-sounding speaking voice.

After people began to comment on the differences, Ariana wrote on X: ‘I intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing. I’ve always done this.’

The Wicked star also added that becoming Glinda had an impact. ‘The voice is in the body, it’s an instrument, and muscle memory is a real thing. That’s a normal thing for people who[se] job [is] to transform,’ she explained on the Shut Up Evan podcast.

Rob Rinder

Rylan’s close friend Rob Rinder has confessed to purposefully going against his natural accent.

‘This is not real, my voice is an artifice, it’s a complete fiction,’ he explained on Jamie Laing’s Good Company Podcast.

‘I grew up, you know, around the corner from Amy Winehouse and my dad was a taxi driver.

‘That’s how I grew up and then at the age of three – no offence to them, although it sounds like a deliberate one – I sort of rather felt that I’d spiritually, intellectually and culturally outgrown them and had enough so I invented this.’

Austin Butler

Austin Butler took the preparation for Elvis seriously and worked with a dialect coach to perfect the deep, raspy, Southern voice.

After filming for two years, Austin found it difficult to return to his pre-Elvis voice, which the internet quickly picked up on.

The Californian-based actor explained to Elle Australia that his natural shyness could have something to do with it sticking around.

‘I’m a shy person, and when I know that there’s bits of Elvis that I’d have to click into in order to go out on stage and be in front of a ton of people, being surrounded by his name everywhere, there’s triggers,’ he shared.

‘You spend so much time obsessing about one thing, and it really is like muscular habits, your mouth can change. It’s pretty amazing. I know that I’m constantly changing. Check in with me in 20 years when I’ve played a lot of roles, who knows what I’ll sound like!’

During the five-minute video, Rylan covered an eclectic array of subjects, even making time to discuss the wildlife in his home.

While giving an update on the snake that has visited his abode on a couple of occasions, Rylan revealed he’s an avid reader of Metro (good man!) and flashed up an article about its last intrusion on the screen.

While he admitted the snake has been evading him lately, Patrice the pheasant is more reliable. He is expecting Patrice ‘the social media star’ to be back next month.
