For the first time in four years, Hitman developer Io Interactive have spoken about their upcoming new James Bond game – or rather games.
Although Io Interactive announced they’re making a James Bond game, referred to as Project 007, back in 2020, they’ve never shown anything of it in public and the only thing they’ve said up till now is that it’s ‘going to tell the story of the first Bond and how he becomes the secret agent that he is.’
There was confusion as to what was meant by ‘first Bond’ but Io has now clarified that they’re making a trilogy of games that will feature a unique version of 007 and not one based on any previous actor’s portrayal.
Of course, there is no current Bond at the moment, but from the way Io is talking it doesn’t seem as if they’re going to shoehorn in whoever is eventually cast for the role (Aaron Taylor-Johnson still seems to be the current frontrunner).
What is Project 007?
According to Io CEO Hakan Abrak the first game will be an origin story, although he doesn’t seem to rule some sort of crossover to the inevitable new films eventually.
‘I just hope we’ll do a thing that will define James Bond in gaming for years to come. And that is not only one game, but that we create a universe for gamers to own for many years to come that we can grow with that next to the Bond on the movies,’ Abrak told IGN.
There hasn’t been a new James Bond game in 12 years (the dreadful 007 Legends from Activision) and to this day the only universally acclaimed one is N64 classic GoldenEye 007.
‘What’s exciting about that project is that we actually got to do an original story. So it’s not a gamification of a movie. It’s completely beginning and becoming a story, hopefully for a big trilogy out there in the future,’ says Abrak.
‘And equally important and exciting, it’s a new Bond. It’s a Bond we built from ground up for gamers. It’s extremely exciting with all the tradition and all the history there is there together to work on this together with the family of creating a young Bond for gamers; a Bond that the gamers can call their own and grow with.’
While the Daniel Craig version of Casino Royale was treated as an origin story, Bond is traditionally portrayed as an older and more experienced character than most action stars.
Nevertheless, there was a series of young adult novels by Charlie Higson that featured Bond as a teenager in the 1930s and a terrible children’s cartoon in the early 90s called James Bond Jr.
It seems almost certain, though, that the new game will be set in the present day, although it’ll be interesting to see if the look of the character is based on a real actor or if it’ll be entirely CGI.
