Liam Payne had started filming a Netflix reality series helping to create ‘the next great pop group’ in the weeks before his death.

The former One Direction star was pronounced dead aged 31 after falling from a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina this week.

He was staying at the Hotel Casa Sur when he fell from the balcony on Wednesday night.

Since his death was announced, tributes have been rolling in, including from his former bandmates, who said in a shared statement they would ‘miss him terribly’ and needed to ‘take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly’.

Although plans for Payne’s second solo album were reportedly put on hold recently, the singer had been working on another huge project with Netflix.

Last month it was announced that Payne was part of a judging panel to ‘create the next great pop group sight unseen’.

In the press release announcing the series Building the Band, the streaming service said it was set to feature former The Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger as a mentor and judge.

She was set to be joined by Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland and Payne, with Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean to host.

‘Who better to help build a band than some of the most legendary artists who ever did it?’ Netflix explained.

‘These hitmakers will bring their unparalleled expertise and years of personal experience to the competition.’

In the announcement, Netflix also explained the show would ‘take face-to-face encounters out of the musical equation’.

‘Instead, the contestants will find their perfect bandmates based on compatibility, connection, and, most importantly, merit. And when the bands finally do meet, how will looks, choreography, and style come into play? Expect plenty of drama, next-level artistry, and unforgettable performances.’

The show started filming over the summer, with Payne and the other stars spotted in Manchester in August.

However, it now remains uncertain how the show will proceed in the wake of the performer’s death.

When paying tribute to Payne, his former bandmate Louis Tomlinson shared they had wanted to work together again.

‘Liam was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody, we often spoke of getting back in the studio together to try and recreate the writing chemistry we had built up in the band,’ he wrote.

He went on to express his regret at not being able to perform together again, saying ‘I would have loved to share the stage with you again, but it wasn’t to be’, before adding Payne was ‘the most vital part of One Direction’.
