I’m a fashion expert and this one winter trend is making you look short and dumpy, you need to follow my balancing rules
AS winter approaches and the days get colder, you may already be reaching for cosy and oversized layers.
From baggy jumpers to roomy jeans and thick coats, it’s time to get comfy in your clothes again.

But wearing too many of these oversized pieces together can do more harm than good for your overall look – especially if you are on the shorter side.
Fashion expert Giorgio Ammirabile at CSD revealed that wearing baggy tops and bottoms will overwhelm a shorter frame and make you look wider.
He told us: “Those who are shorter in height should avoid wearing oversized tops and bottoms together, as the combination can make you look even shorter and wider at the hips and waist.
“It can make you appear less proportionate as it will hide your natural shape.
“Instead, try to balance out your outfit and play with shapes that flatter your frame.”
Giorgio said the key to nailing the oversized trend is to ensure “you’re not drowning in fabric”.
He suggests pairing an oversized top with fitted trousers or vice versa to maintain structure and an elongated silhouette.
“Balance your outfit with a fitted top and loose trousers or oversized jumper and skinny jeans”, he adds.
“You can also tuck in baggy sweaters to show off your waist or wear cropped oversized tops to define your silhouette.
“Vertical stripes and long-line cardigans can also give the illusion of height.”
Footwear can also play a crucial role in balancing an oversized look.
Giorgio says: “I’ve always believed that selecting the right shoes is about more than just matching colours – it’s about completing the overall silhouette.
“For instance, pairing oversized trousers with small, delicate shoes can look disproportionate and almost comical.
“Instead, I recommend wearing skinny pants with chunky shoes or boots, which creates a balanced, structured look. It’s all about proportions.”
He continues: “If you’re on the shorter side but love the oversized trend, opt for shoes that add height, like platform boots or chunky sneakers.
“These not only help elongate your frame but also balance the bulk of an oversized coat or wide-leg trousers.
“When shoes are too small or disappear under your pants, it can make your feet look tiny and disrupt the flow of the outfit.
“Understanding how to balance your footwear with the rest of your look is key to mastering any trend, especially with oversized clothing.”

Here, Fabulous’ fashion editor, Clemmie Fieldsend, says these are the top 5 trends from the hottest catwalk designers for autumn 2024.
BOHO: The boho revival is a much needed breath of fresh air for autumn and means you can wear your sheer tops, girly frocks and big jeans with heavy duty boots.
But if the clothes aren’t for you think, big accessories like slouchy tote bags, big earrings and bigger bangles.
TEXTURE: Be it smooth leather, sumptuous faux fur or soft suede, textures are everywhere this season.
They add depth to your look, making you stand out as well as look more expensive.
BURGUNDY: Maroon, oxblood, berry- whatever you choose to call it fashion is seeing red this autumn.
The deep and rich colour is everywhere and works best with greys, black, dark blues and in head-to-toe.
LADY LIKE: Matching top and cardigan sets and pencil skirts sound dated but they go hand-in-hand with lady-like.
Mix with satin cami dresses and waisted blazers for an ultra feminine look.
LEOPARD PRINT: This season 75% of the catwalk was leopard print, according to Tagwalk – a huge majority.
It crawled its way in last season but its rife for autumn and all over the high street, be it shoes or floor sweeping coats, it’s a must have trend.
