Netflix fans have thrown their support behind a new series drawing comparisons to Yellowstone.

The six-part Australian neo-western drama Territory was released on the streaming service today.

It follows the fight for power in the remote and unforgiving Australian outback when the world’s largest cattle station is left without an apparent heir.

With billions of dollars at stake, everyone wants a piece of the pie and rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders, and billionaire miners all move in for the kill.

Directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek), Mindhunter and The Last of Us star Anna Torv plays Emily Lawson, while her family members are played by Michael Dorman (For All Mankind), Robert Taylor (Longmire) and Sam Corlett (Vikings: Valhalla).

Ahead of its release, Netflix teased: ‘Imagine the family drama of your favourite primetime soap but set in a region so rough and remote that nearly everything can kill you.’

Critics have already praised the series, with The Hollywood Reporter labelling it ‘unapologetically meat-and-potatoes television, in which everybody is gruff, sweaty and coated in a fine layer of dust’.

Meanwhile The Guardian wrote that it features a series of ‘unpredictable bursts of wild spectacle that erupt like claps of thunder, scattered across the run time’.

Viewers who have raced to tune in also agree.

‘Watching the first ep of Territory on Netflix and I really get why it’s described as the Aussie version of Yellowstone,’ Kat posted on X.

‘Watched first episode of Territory on Netflix. Dubbed the New Yellowstone, Good start 8.5/10,’ Sean shared.

‘Territory Netflix series is my new fave show. Episode 2 & I’m already hooked onto it,’ Eki added.

Meanwhile Damo already begged Netflix for season 2, writing ‘Netflix we NEED a season 2 of Territory ASAP!’

Territory was filmed across the Northern Territory and South Australia in locations so remote they’re barely inhabited.

One filming location was Tipperary Station, a real-life, working cattle station that’s so large it has its own airfield and school.

For scale, the real-life Anna Creek Station, which served as one of the inspirations for the series, is bigger than the state of New Jersey.

Meanwhile actor Sam Delich, who plays the impulsive and fast-talking Rich Petrakis said the cast and crew faced days working in 40-45 degree heat in the Northern Territory.

‘We got to experience a side that most tourists won’t be able to experience, which is kind of full immersion,’ he told the ABC.

‘On the weekends, we were swimming in watering holes, and the locals were like, “there might be a croc in there”.’

Territory is streaming on Netflix.
