In a few months buying subscriptions like PS Plus and EA Play won’t credit you points in PlayStation Stars, and starting today Sony is cutting the time you can hold onto points in half.
Sony launched PlayStation Stars back in 2022, with the aim of enticing fans to buy and play games to earn points, which you could then use to get discounts on other PlayStation products, including full price video games.
It immediately became clear that it would cost you almost $2,000 worth of points to redeem a $70 game, so it is a little too good to be true, at least for the average PlayStation fa.
But getting anything worthwhile out of it is about to get even harder to achieve, as a new update makes it clear that fans will no longer be able to get credits for money spent on subscriptions.
That means you’ll no longer get PlayStation Stars credits when they buy PS Plus or EA Play subscriptions.
On top of this, points will only be valid for one year from when they were registered to your account, instead of the two-year limit from before.
That’s according to an email sent to PlayStation Stars users, which states that effective Thursday, October 24:
‘New Points earned will expire at the end of the month plus 12 months from the date on which they appear in your PlayStation Stars account balance. Points earned prior to October 24, 2024 will continue to expire at the end of the month plus 24 months from the date on which they appear in your PlayStation Stars account balance.’
Effective March 1 2025, ‘The definition of ‘Eligible Purchases’ will be updated to exclude all subscription payments made on PlayStation Store (including any initial or renewal subscription payments for PlayStation Plus or any other subscription service), which means that Points will no longer be earned on subscription payments.’
Unless you’re buying a dozen games a month that seems to make getting anything substantial out of PlayStation Stars almost impossible.
You will still earn points when buying games like Astro Bot (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
