Hello, fellow kids (YouTube)

In a bid to appeal to young voters, the Democrat campaign in the US election is putting up political adverts in various Fortnite Creative maps.

The rest of the world gets no say in it, but the election in the US affects everyone, especially when one of the choices is Donald Trump. But the problem for the Democrats and Republicans is the same as in every country: the difficulty in encouraging younger people to get out and vote.

There’s probably no real way to do that but the Kamala Harris campaign has decided that creating a Fortnite map in Creative mode is a good idea, in order to promote tax breaks for small business and affordable housing.

We’re not sure if those are necessarily the hot topics for the majority of 14-year-olds that make up Fortnite’s core audience, but the map is called Freedom Town, USA and can be played today, by anyone in the world, using the code 733155366547.

Creative mode is very different from the standard Battle Royale and does not necessarily feature any combat or violence.

It’s often used by promoters and TV shows that don’t want their characters running around with guns or just for ordinary players that want to create a more mellow environment to mess around in.

Some maps are competitive though and according to IGN at least eight have seen ‘political takeovers’, including the popular maps Drive City, Troll Bed Wars, Meme Boxfights, Super Box PVP, Football Boxfights, Bullseye 2v2, Bullseye 1v1, and Bullseye 3v3.

These will supposedly feature in-game signage, new character and object models, and new audio – including the quote ‘they’re eating the dogs, eating the cats’ from Tromp when you pick up a cat.

There is no equivalent map from the Republican campaign, but the Democrats have put some effort into pushing themselves as gamer friendly, especially in terms of Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz’s supposed love of the Dreamcast.

It’s claimed he was so enamoured by Sega’s final console, circa 1999, that his wife had to take it away from him because he was playing it too much.

In reference to this, Walz recently took part in a Twitch stream with congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, where they played Crazy Taxi and Madden NFL.

While none of this is likely to change anyone’s mind about anything, one can only hope that it implies a more sympathetic attitude towards video games from the Democrats, should they win the election.

During his presidency, Trump blamed various shootings on video games and produced an infamous montage of violent titles, made up of clips from various YouTubers, that he used to confront the ESA (Electronic Software Association).

His vague disproval of video games in general never came to anything though and overall gaming hasn’t been a particularly hot political issue in the US for a while now.

This is bound to influence dozens of votes (YouTube)
