Netflix fans are counting down to Christmas – but to tune into the murderous second season of Squid Game.

After causing a sensation when it was released in 2021, the South Korean series is finally back.

For the few who didn’t watch it, it revolved around a contest where 456 people in financial hardship risked their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games to win billions.

It became the streaming service’s most-watched series ever and won several awards, including 3 Golden Globes and 14 Emmys.

Now the trailer for season 2 has been released and has shown champion Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returning to play again.

Three years after winning the competition he is joined by hundreds of new players and despite his best efforts to advise them the money isn’t worth it – they overrule him, and chaos inevitably breaks out.

The trailer opens with the terrifying masked guards welcoming the new players before explaining that after each game they can decided as a group whether to continue playing or split the money evenly and walk away.

But as they enter the arena to play the infamous Red Light, Green Light game, it becomes clear it’s every man (and woman) for themselves.

In a shocking scene, one man tells the woman standing next to him there is a bee on her and she is then shot in the head after flailing around.

Although Seong Gi-hun begs the players to ‘focus on getting out of this place’ it appears his pleas fall on deaf ears, and they turn on him.

A montage of spine-tingling scenes then shows players being killed, hugging each other and running for their lives.

Fans are already eagerly awaiting the new episodes, sharing their thoughts on social media soon after.

‘CANCEL CHRISTMAS MORE IMPORTANT THINGS ARE HAPPENING!!!! SQUID GAMES IS SO BACK!!!!’ Kelsey posted on X.

‘Cannot wait! That’s my post Christmas viewing sorted!’ Faith shared.

‘This is certainly the best Christmas gift for everyone!’ Chazzy added.

Many others said they ‘couldn’t wait’ and would most definitely be binging the episodes.

During the launch of the trailer, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk teased what viewers can expect this time around and the ‘biggest difference’ between the seasons.

‘If Season 1 was about the story of Gi-hun [Lee], or player no. 456, entering Squid Game for the first time and about how he survives and leaves the game as a winner, Season 2 is going to be about Gi-hun [being] faced with his memories of the first game — the experiences of going through a new realization and awakening and returning once again to the game in order to stop this unjust game,’ he said.

Dong-hyuk previously said he felt ‘a lot of pressure’ to try and make season 2 ‘even better’ after the success of the first.

Netflix has also announced that the third and final season of the show will be released in 2025.

Squid Game season 2 will be released on December 26 on Netflix.
