Sequel to 90s Tom Cruise hit in the works – but a cast reunion is doubtful-Joel Harley-Entertainment – Metro

Tom Cruise is reportedly eyeing up a sequel to his hit 90s film Days of Thunder.

Fresh from the success of his belated sequel Top Gun: Maverick – not to mention all those Mission: Impossible films – the star, 62, is reportedly considering a follow-up to the Tony Scott-directed NASCAR drama.

The sports action film starred the Hollywood icon as hotshot NASCAR racer Cole Trickle, whose rivalry with a veteran racer (The Walking Dead star Michael Rooker) led to explosive action on the race track.

While Days of Thunder isn’t necessarily one would expect to see revived, it does have its fans, including Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs director Quentin Tarantino.

However, should the film come to pass, a full cast reunion seems unlikely. While its action man sounds game, getting the whole gang back together would include his love interest in that film – Doctor Claire Lewicki, who was played by ex-wife Nicole Kidman, 57.

Given the ‘irreconcilable differences’ cited behind their 2001 divorce, we wouldn’t count on a return for Doctor Claire.

Top Gun star Tom Cruise first met Australian actress Nicole Kidman on the set of the film, tying the knot in a private ceremony on Christmas Eve 1990.

The Hollywood power couple were married for 11 years, and went on to adopt two children together – daughter Isabella in 1992, and son Connor in 1995.

In 1992, the husband-and-wife starred together in the romantic adventure film Far and Away, directed by Ron Howard.

The pair appeared together for the third and final time with Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut – their last collaboration before he filed for divorce in 2001.

Citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ for the reason behind their split, the pair haven’t worked together since – making a Days of Thunder reunion seem extremely unlikely.

In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Nicole briefly addressed her marriage after being asked whether her role in Being The Ricardos recalled her own relationship.

‘Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No. I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no.’

She continued: ‘And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, “Give me my life. In its own right”.’

The Babygirl star went on to marry country singer Keith Urban in 2006. The pair met in 2005 and married a year later.

The pair share daughters Sunday Rose, 13, and Faith Margaret, 11 together. The married couple are still going strong – sharing a steamy kiss on the Oscars red carpet in 2023.

As for Tom – who was previously married to Mimi Rogers in 1987 – he went on to marry actress Katie Holmes in 2006. The pair filed for divorce after almost six years of marriage, with her lawyer describing the situation as ‘a personal and private matter for Katie and her family.’

Outside of his three marriages, Tom has also dated pop icon Cher, and actresses Sofia Vergara and Penelope Cruz.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that he had split from Russian socialite Elsina Khayrov, 36, after growing close in December 2023.
