Janey Godley has died at the age of 63 after battling cancer.

The comedian was in hospice care at the time of her death, surrounded by family, according to her agent.

Godley found viral fame with her imitations of Nicola Sturgeon’s COVID-19 news briefings during the pandemic.

She shared with her many fans last month that she was receiving end-of-life care for terminal cancer.

‘It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our client Doctor Janey Godley on 2nd November,’ her agent said on Saturday.

‘Janey died peacefully in the wonderful Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow surrounded by her loved ones. She will be hugely missed by her family, friends and her many fans.

‘She will be remembered for her legendary voice overs of Nicola Sturgeon during the pandemic, her hilarious and outspoken comedy, but most of all for just being ‘Janey’.”

In September, she cancelled her autumn tour due to stage four ovarian cancer.

In a new video posted to Janey’s account, her daughter shares the news of her mother’s death with her 202k followers.

She said: ‘Hello friends, my mum Janey Godley died this morning at about 7. She was with friends and family, and I wanted to tell you face to face because it felt very much what she would have wanted.

‘She went peacefully and I want to say a big thank you to all the staff at the Prince and Princess of Wales hospice. And a big thank you to mum’s found family who were around her throughout these last horrible days.

‘My aunty Ailene, my aunty Monica, Giovanna, Tony Kelly, my daddy, Julia Sutherland. Thank you so much for being there and for making a very very scary moment peaceful and a nice transition. And I want to thank all of you for all of your kindness and your support. I believe in my heart of hearts that she felt every bit of love sent to her and I think it kept her going.

‘I think it genuinely got her longer because of all of the support and love in the world, but that’s it, it’s over now so thank you once again and bye Ma.’

Since the news was announced, celebs and fans have been flooding in to pay tribute to the comedian.

Knowing for the past few weeks that this moment was fast approaching didn’t make it any less heartbreaking to hear the news early this morning that Janey had died.

Nicola Sturgeon wrote on Instagram: ‘Janey Godley truly was a force of nature, and one of the funniest people I have ever known. I was able to visit her in the hospice a couple of weeks ago and though she was fragile, she still had me in stitches.’

She went on to say she felt lucky to call Janey a friend and that she’d miss her deeply.

Denise Welch also paid tribute, posting a series of heart emojis under the announcement news.
