Hollywood star Glen Powell has firmly shot down rumours that he could take over from Tom Cruise in the money-spinning action franchise, Mission: Impossible.
Speculation around the future of the long-running series ramped up as the teaser trailer for the eighth installment, The Final Reckoning, dropped earlier this week – with a reported production cost of $400million (£310m).
The 62-year-old actor has been playing daring field agent Ethan Hunt for the past two decades with the latest movie set to also star Hannah Waddingham and Nick Offerman.
Now it is believed that this will mark the end of the beloved Tom Cruise franchise which has earned over $4billion (£3.1b) across the series.
But after insider The Insneider claimed Tom was eyeing up Glen to be his replacement, the Twisters star has made clear he’s got no interest.
The pair have crossed paths before after starring in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 which proved itself a box office hit.

Nevertheless, despite his taste of a Tom Cruise action movie, Glen is holding the Mission: Impossible series at arm’s length.
‘My mom would never let me do that,’ the Anyone But You actor joked to ESPN’s Pat McAfee.
He added: ‘That’s the worst gig in town, everybody knows that. That’s a death trap.’
There’s no doubt that Tom has thrown himself into some death-defying stunts over the years.
In the 2023 film, Dead Reckoning, the hands-on actor drove himself off a cliff on a motorbike which saw him drop several hundred feet before pulling his parachute.
And his risk-taking behaviour has not been without consequence. In Mission: Impossible – Fallout he had to jump from one building to another while ‘going at full tilt, sprinting as hard I can’ which resulted in a broken ankle.
Despite the injury he jumped from a height of 25,000 feet for another stunt. Elsewhere, he has broken two ribs after being launched into the side of a car.
As an adrenaline junkie, Tom’s enthusiasm makes sense. He previously told Wired: ‘I’ve always done outrageous physical stunts, even as a kid. My mother had incredible patience.’

In the Top Gun sequel Glen plays Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin, the mentee of Cruises’s character Pete Mitchell, meaning the acting duo grew pretty close during filming.
He recalled to Entertainment Weekly at the time: ‘I would be updating him about my progress, and he would check in with me. After I got my pilot’s license, there was a little card that just said,”‘Welcome to the skies.”‘
And both actors will be returning to the air once more for a third go-around which is still in early development.
The Hollywood hunk’s actual next project is Hulu comedy series Chad Powers which follows a quarterback whose college career ends after bad behaviour.
After being spotted on set, the A-lister looked entirely unrecognisable in his costume which included a prosthetic nose and a blonde wig. He is also serving as the co-creator and executive producer on the show.
