There’s an internal war over GTA: The Trilogy (Rockstar)

An update to GTA: The Trilogy has sparked anger from the game’s developers, after the studio’s name was removed from the opening screen.

Remaster collection GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition should have been an easy win for Rockstar Games when it released in 2021, but the game was mired in controversy over its bug-ridden state.

Almost three years later, an update has given the compilation some notable upgrades, including better animations, lighting effects, and other visual improvements for GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas.

The update, however, has caused some controversy with the port’s main developer, Grove Street Games, after all mentions of the studio were removed from the opening title screen.

As noted in various posts on X, the updated opening titles have entirely removed Grove Street Games from the splash screen, with publisher Rockstar, who made the original games, now the only one mentioned.

While the developer is still listed in the remaster’s closing credits, Grove Street Games CEO Thomas Williamson has since called out Rockstar, for what he describes as a ‘dick move’.

‘Speaking entirely hypothetically: It’s a dick move to remove primary developers from credits in an update, especially when an update includes hundreds of fixes that were provided by those developers that stayed out of players’ hands for years,’ Williamson posted on X.

There is another twist to this tale. A mobile port of GTA: The Trilogy was released last year, which was developed by another studio named Video Games Deluxe, made up of former members of L.A. Noire developer Team Bondi.

This mobile version, which included various improvements over the original port, was far better received, with many of the new additions – like the classic lighting mode – being added to the console versions through this new update.

Video Game Deluxe has since been added to the console version’s closing credits, following this update, which suggests these improvements are largely based on that studio’s work.

While there’s clearly some internal politics at play, it’s Rockstar that is primarily at fault here. They didn’t develop the remastered collection but they were still in charge of it and decided to release it in its bug-ridden state, instead of delaying it.

Rockstar is currently full steam ahead on the highly-anticipated GTA 6, with many fans expecting a new trailer to drop before the end of the year.
