Who could forget the cultural sensation certain word games and their follow-ups created when they landed on the scene?

These days, online games have become the quickest and most enjoyable way to keep our vocabulary sharp. Since Spelling Bee, the web-based spelling game, was launched online in 2018, other word games followed. It’s as if the conventional crossword games in your favourite newspaper have evolved!

The simplicity of the concept of these daily word games is what made them appealing, giving us satisfaction on a daily basis from completing a puzzle and sharing the results among friends, followers, and other puzzle enthusiasts.

However, as much as we love the opportunity to engage our brains in these daily challenges, Wordle and the like come with a significant downside: they can only be played once per day.

Don’t worry, your plight has been noticed. Realising many among us can’t get enough of word puzzle games, We’ve rounded up the best puzzlers available on Metro’s Free Games page (powered by Arkadium) to sharpen your minds… without the constraints of a one-per-day limit. You can play any game, anytime you want to keep your mind sharp.

Before you try these engaging games, check out our top picks for some of the top-rated puzzles.

Today’s Hurdle

This game allows you to guess a five-letter word without any initial clues. After you fill out the first word, coloured tiles will show up to signal the placement of the letters. Instead of just one puzzle in a game, you get several. The next one begins with a clue resulting from the first puzzle.

And the best part? It’s free, and you can play more than once daily.

Categories

If you’ve ever tried grouping words based on categories in Connections, you’ll love Categories. It works basically the same way, where you must guess what categories some words belong to. Some categories are obvious, while others are not so much. The difficulty level of this category-matching game is a wee bit higher than Connections, although that’s what makes it fun.

Wander Words

Wander Words looks so simple, yet not so easily solved. You must connect letters on tiles to form a word by guessing the direction of the letter tiles’ succession properly. The connection grids are not always obvious in their placements. Thankfully, there’s a clue on the left column so finding out the right word is easy. Still, you’ll be directionally challenged when trying to connect the tiles.

Cryptic Crossword

Bored with the regular crossword? Try a cryptic one. Even with the easy level, you will have to turn your brain upside down to solve a puzzle. The traditional format is familiar and reassuring, but the descriptions of the word can be vague and misleading (and Google doesn’t help a lot). When you’re done with it, there’s a real sense of accomplishment there.

Fill-Ins

Here’s another variation of the crossword puzzle. Instead of filling in words based on descriptions, you find the correct word to fill in based on a list of words already provided by the game. To begin with, you only get one letter as a clue, and you must continue on your own. It can get dicey when the first word you fill in turns out incorrect, but it’s great fun to match one word to the next.

Daily True Trivia

Take your mind off word games for a while, and try this trivia game. If you think the trivia is easy peasy, hold on—it’s trickier than you think. The trick lies in the short time you have to click the True or False button; sometimes, time runs out when you’re still thinking about the statements. Even though it’s simple, it’s still entertaining and engaging.
