EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick has missed out on a place in the Strictly Come Dancing quarter-final as he becomes the ninth contestant to leave the show.

The actor, 30, and his professional partner Michelle Tsiakkas faced the dreaded dance-off against Olympian Montell Douglas, 38, and her partner Johannes Radebe during Sunday’s results show.

Jamie and Michelle reprised their graceful foxtrot to Stand By Me by Ben E King, which landed them a score of 32 from the judges during Saturday’s live show.

While the judges agreed they were a strong couple, sadly they just didn’t receive enough public votes so got the boot.

Fans were perplexed and took to social media to claim that Jamie should have made it to the final.

‘Jamie and Michelle have been absolutely robbed here. Should’ve been quarter-finalists, semi-finalists and finalists 😢 #Strictly,’ said Hannahhou on X.

‘Poor Jamie. He was under marked and over criticised the whole series. He should never have been in the dance off. He can leave with his head held high and his dignity intact #Strictly #SCD #StrictlyComeDancing,’ said Mabel_Mouse_.

‘Gutted. Ain’t no way Jamie deserves to be in the bottom this week, he was absolutely brilliant. Sometimes the British public get it SO wrong and this is one of those times 😔😔😔’ commented AAngels05.

Some commenters also suggested that Pete Wicks should not have made it through to the quarter-final. Responding to some of the negative comments about his dancing skills, Pete admitted on social media that he agreed that he wasn’t as strong a dancer as some of his fellow competitors.

In part of the caption he penned: ‘Trust me I know I’m not as good as the rest and I’m sorry for that but I’m trying my best, we all are. I’m just trying to improve and learn as I go.

‘No one is more surprised that I’m still here than me. We’re all giving it 100% and no one wants to see anyone go home.’

The actor, who was crowned champion of the Christmas special last year with pro dancer Nancy Xu, was complimented by judges as he was eliminated.

Judge Anton Du Beke told the actor that he is a ‘beautiful dancer’ but advised him to be more ‘ridiculous’ and ‘over the top’ following his performance on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Gladiator Montell and Johannes performed their quickstep to Get Happy by Ella Fitzgerald again in a bid to impress the judges.

They had received a score of 37 for the routine on Saturday, with Anton saying it was their best performance since their couple’s choice.

However, Craig Revel Horwood thought it looked ‘a bit stiff’ at the beginning but felt the dynamics were ‘out of this world’.

After both couples had danced a second time, the judges unanimously agreed to save Montell and Johannes, sending Jamie and Michelle packing.

Montell had also been in the dance-off last week, which saw Wynne Evans and partner Katya Jones eliminated.

Reflecting on his time on the show, Jamie hailed Strictly Come Dancing as ‘magic’ and praised those who work on the show.

He said: ‘Not just everyone who you see in front of the camera, these four here (the judges), but everyone who works on this show, I have such a good bond and relationship with and that’s what made me want to do this show, it’s the people, not what I’m doing. I’ve had the best time.’

The actor, who was the first celebrity partner for Michelle on the show, gushed over her as being the ‘most amazing teacher’.

‘We have laughed like you wouldn’t believe. I have nothing but the utmost respect for everyone on the show, so thank you,’ he added.

She returned the sentiment, saying: ‘Jamie is an amazing dancer, and he’s improved so much week by week.

‘He’s worked so hard to get to where he is. It’s my first year with a partner and I’ve realised that it’s so much more than just the dancing and the technique, it’s the bonds and the friendships that you make.

‘I waited two years for a partner and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.’

Saturday night’s live show elsewhere saw Love Island star Tasha Ghouri scoring the first perfect 40, with her partner Alijaz Skorjanec, with an American Smooth to Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi.

The night also saw the return of the dance-a-thon, where Tasha was voted runner-up behind JLS singer JB Gill, who now dances with Lauren Oakley after Amy Dowden was forced to pull out.

Elsewhere, comedian Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell performed a fiery paso doble, which turned emotional as she revealed her parents were in the audience and had not seen her dance since she joined the show seven years ago.

Towie star Pete Wicks found himself at the bottom of the leaderboard again, after scoring a 29 to his tango with pro partner Jowita Przystal to Easy Lover by Philip Bailey and Phil Collins.

The remaining six couples will take to the dancefloor next week for the quarter final with the live show returning to BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday November 30 at 7.05pm and the results show airing on Sunday December 1 at 7.20pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
