Human Vs. Hamster is a real thing, and it might be your new favourite game show.

The trailer might feel like something of a fever dream, but the new Max series already has people gripped with some viewers hailed it ‘the best thing ever’.

If you’ve ever looked at your pet hamster running on its wheel and thought “I could beat that”, then this is the show for you.

The series pits a human against a hamster in a battle of speed, endurance and skill as they each take on their own scale version of the same obstacle course.

From running the wheel and getting in and out of a bottle to making it through a pool of stuffed toys, it’s all here as the contestants battle it out with their furry foes.

‘Human VS Hamster is, without a doubt, the best television there is out there right now,’ wrote @RichieFavalaro on X, while @cmcsed9 added: ‘I’m watching Human vs Hamster and it’s kind of the best thing ever?’

‘Calling it now. New favorite show,’ @silromen42 commented under the trailer on YouTube, as @crowkid5553 said: ‘Points for originality I guess.’

Not everyone was quite so enamoured, with @scbtripwire writing: ‘So this is the result of running out of ideas.’

Co-host and hamster expert Brian Balthazar described the show as great fun for the family, and he insisted viewers will be amazed by ‘how close’ the races are, and ‘how frequently the hamsters beat the humans.’

‘They’re really agile, they can jump higher than most humans can,’ he added, noting he naturally meant relative to their own height .

‘You will find yourselves rooting for the hamsters,’ he told NewsNation. ‘The hamsters are hilarious and great, and super good at it.’

Although there might be concerns over animal welfare, he argued that ‘these are all things that hamsters love to do’, and it might actually be ‘more of a challenge for some of the humans’.

So, how do the hamsters get to know the course, and not get distracted by detours?

‘These hamsters had to train for about six weeks on the course. They had to learn what the course looks like,’ Brian explained, while the animals are kept on track with little treats along the way.

‘Like myself, food is a great motivator,’ he quipped.

The programme is currently streaming on Max for viewers in the US, and Warner Bros Discover has promised ‘a monumental battle that will test their skill, strength, agility, and of course, their eating prowess’.

‘In this never-before-seen epic competition 10 extraordinary hamsters go toe-to-toe with teams of exceptional humans from all across North America,’ the synopsis reads.

‘Brace yourself for the ultimate showdown, housed inside an epic hamster’s playground, seen through a child’s lens, where our human contenders and remarkable hamsters will battle it out in a series of wacky challenges, all for the sake of determining which species is superior, humans or hamsters?’
