Phillip Schofield has been slammed by Chesney Hawkes, who claims the former TV star played a brutal joke on him as a teenager.

Hawkes, 53, opened up about his earlier years of fame in a recent interview, explaining that while he was seeing major success on the charts, among his peers, it was a different story.

The One And Only singer was just 19 when he starred in Buddy’s Song, which used his single and resulted in it quickly landing the number-one spot on the UK Singles Chart for five consecutive weeks.

Sharing how his fame was received by other men in the entertainment industry, Hawkes recalled a particular moment at the 1991 Smash Hits’ Poll Winners’ Party where Schofield, 62, performed a skit.

Admitting: ‘Phillip was one of the first people who was very nice to me,’ the musician went on to say, things soon took a brutal turn between them.

‘Phillip Schofield…B*****d. I remember he once did a (jokey) sketch at [these] awards in 1991 where he pushed me into Hell with a pitchfork. I remember that moment as I was only a kid, I was 19,’ he told the Mirror.

Schofield did not push Hawkes himself, but rather a person dressed to look like the musician into a ‘firey’ pit.

‘I remember it well. I watched [the show] that year with my parents at home, and they did this horrible thing where Phillip pushed me to the gates of Hell with a pitchfork. They had this guy dressed as me in a blonde wig with a mole. It was awful.’

Unfortunately for Hawkes, he said Schofield wasn’t the only male figure in the industry that he was receiving flack from.

He said Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan also took a swipe at him as he dominated the charts during the 90s peak grunge era along with bands like Nirvana.

But, unlike Schofield, he managed to get back at Morgan as his father saw the talk show host at the Ivor Novello awards the following year and ‘poured a pint of lager’ over him.

Years later, Hawkes still has questions about the brutality he was subject to from the well-known entertainment figures and said: ‘How does this happen? They were all old enough to know better.’

‘I think those moments, they were really difficult. I kind of had to push it down and tighten the lid on it and had to think it was just water off a duck’s back. I just thought I would write a few songs and carry on but it is not until later on that I thought it was proper sh*t and it is not acceptable to do that.’

It comes after the star released Get A Hold Of Yourself in September, his first song in over 12 years.

Co-written with top producer Jake Gosling, who has previously penned hits for the likes of One DirectionEd Sheeran, and Lady Gaga, the song came with an X-rated music video inspired by the hit 2022 film Saltburn.

Speaking to the Daily Mail ahead of its release, the Here Comes My Baby singer explained his thought process behind the nude shoot and admitted it’s good to ‘let go’ sometimes

‘It’s good for us all to let go of ourselves sometimes and feel free – especially for me in my 50s… I wanted to show a different side of myself … even if it was my rear side.’
