Harry Potter star Rubert Grint ordered to pay nearly £2 million after losing legal battle-Brooke Ivey Johnson-Entertainment – Metro

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter film franchise, has been ordered to pay £1.8million in taxes after losing a protracted legal battle.

The case stemmed from an investigation into Grint’s tax return for the 2011-12 financial year.

During that period, Grint received a payment of £4.5m from a company managing his business interests.

This sum was described as ‘consideration for rights, records, and goodwill’ tied to his acting career

Grint argued that this payment should be treated as a capital asset subject to capital gains tax, which generally carries a lower tax rate than income tax.

However, HMRC challenged this interpretation, asserting that the payment was taxable as regular income. After its investigation, HMRC determined that Grint owed a staggering additional £1.8million in tax.

Grint’s legal team contested HMRC’s decision during a hearing at the First-Tier Tribunal in London, held in late 2022. They maintained that Grint had paid the correct amount of tax and sought to overturn the ruling.

Despite their efforts, Tribunal Judge Harriet Morgan upheld HMRC’s stance, concluding that the payment ‘derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint’ and should therefore be classified as income earned in the 2011-12 tax year.

This is not the first time Grint has faced challenges over his tax affairs. In 2019, he lost a separate case involving a £1million tax refund.

Grint, who rose to fame at just 12 years old with his debut in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001, reportedly earned approximately £24million for his portrayal of Ron Weasley throughout the franchise.

Amid his first legal battle, Rupert confessed that he’s not sure how much money he has in the bank.

Speaking to Radio Times, the 30-year-old said: ‘I actually don’t know how much I have. I couldn’t even really guess.

‘It doesn’t really motivate me too much. It makes you comfortable, that’s the good thing about it, I think. I’m glad it’s there but I’m not really that focused on it.’
