Strictly Come Dancing viewers were left cringing after host Tess Daly made somewhat of an ill-judged comment towards Chris McCausland.

Chris makes history this series as Strictly’s first-ever blind contestant who, partnered with Dianne Buswell, has stolen the hearts of the nation.

The Liverpudlian comedian, 47, and Australian pro, 35, have swerved the dance-off each week, with the public voting them through to the quarterfinal following routines such as a powerful couple’s choice and an emotional waltz.

With the final just a fortnight away, the beloved pair gave it their all in a lively quickstep during Musicals Week to You’re the Top from Anything Goes.

As the couple made their way over to Tess to receive their judges’ feedback, however, the presenter appeared to speak without thinking.

As Dianne celebrated Chris nailing the routine and wore a big smile on her face, wrapping her arms around him, Tess said: ‘Can you see how happy she is with you?’

‘You’ve worked so hard this week,’ she praised.

However, Chris didn’t appear to take notice of what was said, as the breathless star was more bothered about his wardrobe choice.

‘I hate wearing a tie at the best of times!’, he said.

‘Burning that many calories with a tie on… it’s something else. Let these guys do some talking,’ he added, pointing to the panel.

Tess’s remark was picked up by countless viewers, though, who couldn’t help but comment on the irony.

Taking to X, WriterofQueen wrote: ‘Did Tess just ask Chris if he could see how happy Dianne was’.

User 222virgo222 added: ‘did tess actually just say “can you see how happy she is with you” to chris. a blind man.’

‘Tess strikes again’, wrote smallstepforsam, recalling how Tess also told Tasha Ghouri, who is partially deaf, that the audience could ‘hear a pin drop’ following her dance a few weeks back.

‘No way did Tess just say to Chris “can you see how happy she is?”‘, added a shocked Mrs_Worm.

Viewer ScotRamsay was one of few defending the host, writing: ‘Potentially embarrassing, but as a severely visually impaired person I find these things hilarious.’

However, EilidhNash replied: ‘If it was an early week it would be easier to accept the irony but we’re at the Quarter Final, it’s should be ingrained by now not to make those kind of comments’.

Chris and Dianne landed second bottom of the scoreboard with 32 points this week.

Judge Craig Revel Horwood said of the dance: ‘Your posture, I think, suffered in this particular dance coming up, and it was getting a little bit hunched again, and your weight seemed to be drifting a little bit too far forward.

‘The footwork at the end was not right as well, but you know what you bring to this? Personality. The acting was absolutely brilliant.

‘And I agree with everyone else, the movement around the floor, the amount of floor you covered, was exceptional.’

Chris has amazed audiences week after week with his performances, despite having no visual reference points and having to rely on Dianne physically placing his feet where they need to be in rehearsals.

But, the beloved star has insisted that he doesn’t want the ‘sympathy vote’.

Speaking to The Mirror, Chris said recently: ‘I don’t want to be the sympathy vote. I don’t mind being a bad dancer. I don’t mind people laughing at me because I’m a comical dancer or a bad dancer, but I didn’t want it to be a calamity because I can’t see.’

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturday and Sunday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
