Blockbuster sequel with lukewarm 65% rating breaks box office record with $386,300,000-Alistair McGeorge-Entertainment – Metro

No one knows how far it goes, but Moana 2 is already smashing records at the box office.

The highly anticipated sequel, hailed by Metro as an ‘absolutely stunning film’ in our four-star review, stormed to an impressive $386.3million (£304m) haul worldwide over its opening weekend despite scoring just 65% on Rotten Tomatoes.

At $221m in the US, the film has smashed the highest five-day opening of all time in the United States, beating the previous record of $204.6m by The Super Mario Bros Movie.

The movie, which sees Auli’I Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson back as Moana and Maui respectively, has also triumphed over Frozen 2.

Moana 2 now holds the Thanksgiving record, surpassing the 2019 sequel’s $125m for its five-day opening, while it has more than doubled Frozen’s $94m Thanksgiving debut.

As reported by Deadline, it’s also the highest ever Black Friday at the box office at $54.5m, topping Frozen 2’s $34.2m.

It’s even set the record opening for a Walt Disney Animation film, again beating Frozen 2, which took $130.3m.

The movie follows Moana’s journey eight years after the first, now a big sister and ‘living legend’ in her community, and she once again teams up with Maui, this time to break the god Naol’s curse on the hidden island of Motufetu.

The synopsis teases: ‘After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.’

‘Moana 2 is an absolutely stunning film visually. It looks gorgeous, and ultra-realistic in the way it animates everything from hair strands to water,’ Metro said in our review.

Given its box office success already, fans will already be wondering if a potential third film could be on the cards, and co-director Jason Hand hasn’t ruled it out.

‘I mean, for this particular film, we just finished it, it feels like, so we’re still basking in that,’ he told RadioTimes.com.

‘I do feel like the character of Moana, there’s so much to her. I think there’s obviously more stories that could be told. But right now, we’re just excited about the film we made.’

There’s definitely more for fans to look forward to, with a live-action remake of the original Moana movie hitting the big screen next year.

The Rock is reprising the role of Maui, and despite his career successes and a return to WWE this year, he’s still looking to the future on the big screen.

‘I think I wouldn’t be content because there’s just more and I know there’s more,’ he told Metro when asked how he’d feel if the live action movie was his last.
