All the best fan theories about what will happen in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas 2024 finale-Laura Harman-Entertainment – Metro

Fans have a variety of theories about how the final episode of Gavin and Stacey will end (Picture: BBC)

As the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special approaches, fans have begun wondering how James Corden and Ruth Jones may choose to wrap up the series.

The creators have made it clear that this festive special episode will be the last-ever episode of the series.

While the producers have tried to keep spoilers under wraps while filming – some hints have emerged as the cast has been spotted in certain outfits and in particular locations while filming.

Based on some images which showed the cast on-set, plus the cliffhanger left from the last season some theories from fans have emerged.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the best fan rumours that have emerged…

Nessa and Smithy will get married

Alright, so this is probably the most popular theory with fans guessing (and hoping) that perhaps we will see Smithy and Nessa finally tie the knot and get together in the final episode.

In the final moments of the 2019 Christmas special, Nessa proposed to Smithy- but we didn’t hear his response. Fans reckon that they will have postponed their wedding because of the pandemic and we will see them get hitched in the finale.

‘Smithy and Nessa are engaged but has been off/on again for the last 5 years, finally tying the knot in the special. Maybe the stag night ensures that the fishing trip gets brought up, but of course no explanation actually aired,’ therorised mrsc_52 on Reddit.

‘Honestly I think it will just be Smithy and Nessa’s wedding and the lead up etc,’ said One-Mathematician-37.

We won’t learn what happened on the fishing trip

The fishing trip in Gavin and Stacey has been a highly confusing piece of Gavin and Stacey lore that centres around uncle and nephew duo, Bryn and Jason and something bad and mysterious that happened on a fishing trip.

While fans are hoping they might finally learn what really went down on the fishing trip, some superfans have theorised that the creators never plan on telling us.

‘We WON’T find out what happened on the fishing trip,’ theorised Chocolateisthebest97 in a popular post on Reddit.

Some theorised that it would be discussed but again, never revealed. ‘Jason and Bryn start to explain what happened on the fishing trip and get interrupted again,’ suggested Callum776.

‘I hope the new episode ends with “fine, we’ll tell you what happened!” To the family, then cuts to black,’ said big_white_fishie.

Pete and Dawn get a divorce but get back together

Some fans have theorised that the tumultuous couple Pete and Dawn may actually split – but will be brought back together by the end of the episode.

‘Pete and Dawn have divorced and both seperately try anonymous online dating and respectively get on really well with the individuals that they’re corresponding with, only to arrange a meet up to find it was each other all along. “If you like Pina Coladas….”,’ theorised Jaikus.

‘Pete and Dawn are divorced. Dawn tries online dating. It doesn’t work out, Pete and Dawn end up back together,’ predicted Callum776.

This one isn’t particularly far-fetched for this couple – so might be a good theory to add to the bingo card!

Pam and Mick will move to Wales

This one is a bit more far-fetched given Pamela’s outspoken distaste for Barry Island and everything Wales has to offer, but some think that Pam and Mick may make the move given most of their family will have left Essex.

‘I do believe it’s possible Pam and Mick could have moved to Barry to join Gavin and Stacey and then Smithy marrying Nessa and them both moving to Wales),’ said dudiebshd134 in a popular post.

‘Pam and Mick will have moved to Barry to be closer to the family, and so Pam doesn’t have to use Gwen’s 40 year old towels,’ TeuchterK joked.

Someone will die

Some more morbid fans have theorised that it might be a funeral that brings the whole gang together. While it’s one of the darker theories, funerals have been a device used by previous TV shows to bring gangs together after a period of time.

Additionally, James Corden did hint that someone may die in the finale he called ‘hard to watch’. It’s unclear if he was joking but nonetheless fans are thinking death is on the cards.

‘Don’t come at me but I reckon it’ll start with a funeral. I was hoping it would be like in line with four weddings and a funeral (Gavin and Stacey, Dawn and Pete, Nessa and Smithy and someone else??) but I’m not sure who else would be married.

‘A final episode would surely need some sort of big event to tie everything over. A la Cold Feet in the 90s,’ Commercial-Pie3088 said.

It won’t be the last ever episode

Alright, this may be wishful thinking on our part, but a lot of fans are hopeful that this special won’t in fact be the last we will see of the cast.

‘Never believe the ‘last ever episode’ stuff. How many last ever episodes did Only Fools & Horses have? If people still want to watch it and a decent number of the cast still want to make it (or can be persuaded to by a big bag of cash) more will be made,’ said PiemasterUK.

We hope so too!

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special airs at Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
