Clive Myrie has issued an apology and vowed a huge career change after failing to declare outside earnings.

The 60-year-old BBC Newsreader and Mastermind host, who recently published a memoir and also has a travel series, didn’t declare £65,000 from corporate events over the last year, it was reported in October.

It was claimed he failed to include 11 engagements in his list to the corporation, after BBC director-general Tim Davie asked for on-screen talent to declare outside earnings and publish declarations every three months in an attempt for more transparency.

Myrie has now apologised and said he won’t be taking part in any more paid external events for ‘the foreseeable future’.

He wrote on X: ‘An apology – I’ve had several administrative issues, and I didn’t fill out the correct paperwork for some of my external public events, so they haven’t been published until now.

‘I’ve told the BBC I won’t be taking part in any more paid external events in the foreseeable future, beyond a handful of pre-existing commitments, so that this doesn’t happen again.

‘My sincere apologies. Thanks, Clive.’

Fans shared their support in the comments, with X user Sadie writing: ‘We all make mistakes Clive. You’re a joy to watch and your books are all thrilling reads. Keep doing what you’re doing.’

@FineLineDubai said: ‘Ignore the obvious bots that are just being negative for the sake of it. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s called being human and being busy. You’ve held your hand up and apologised, that’s all that’s needed. Move on and carry on being you and the pleasure to watch that you are.’

Earlier this year, The Sunday Times claimed Myrie failed to declare his work as a debate chairman at GreenTalks Live, an event hosted by the Isle of Man’s Energy and Sustainability Centre, and as a keynote speaker at Dutch bank ING’s Views From The Top dinner at The Gherkin in London.

Both events are reported to have commanded fees of more than £10,000.

The publication also claimed Myrie also failed to report nine other engagements, including work as a guest speaker at Suffolk Chamber of Commerce’s Prestige Dinner, a host at the National Residential Landlords Association’s conference, and as host of an Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association lunch.

The other roles are said to be worth between £5,000 and £10,000 to Myrie.

At the time, a BBC spokesperson said Myrie had apologised and that they’d spoken to him to ‘remind him of his responsibilities’.

A statement read: ‘We have spoken to Clive to remind him of his responsibilities with regards to the external events register, and he has apologised for these errors.’

The presenter is reportedly earning a salary between £310,000 and £314,999 at the BBC, according to its most recent annual report published in March 2024.
