When publishers aren’t trying to ape Fortnite’s success with their own live service games, that typically shut down not long after launch (Ubisoft’s XDefiant being the latest example), it seems they want some of that Genshin Impact money, with free-to-play open world gacha games.
There’s been talk of Elden Ring getting a mobile version specifically inspired by Genshin Impact’s model and today, Chinese publisher PaperGames has released its own potential rival in Infinity Nikki.
While the game itself is visually very cute, with vibes so sweet they’ll give you cavities, the official Infinity Nikki website was recently hacked to display a far less endearing message to anyone who saw it.
As spotted and shared via Reddit, if you visited the Infinity Nikki website this morning, you would have been met with a message telling you to commit suicide. That or play Genshin Impact instead, via a private server.
The message came with a QR code as well, although we haven’t checked to see if it works, since it could very easily be a scam of some kind. The website has since been restored to normal, although neither PaperGames nor developer Infold Games have made an official comment on the situation.
Reportedly, the website was compromised for roughly 30 to 40 minutes, which isn’t an insubstantial amount of time for such a harmful message to be displayed.
Although it’s easy to assume this was the work of a disgruntled Genshin Impact fan fearful of new competition, there’s ultimately no evidence either way. It could just as easily be someone looking to stir up hate between Genshin Impact and Infinity Nikki players.
What is Infinity Nikki?
Self-described as an open world dress up game, Infinity Nikki sees you collecting a variety of outfits to dress up in, which in turn have abilities to aid you with solving puzzles and exploring more of the world.
This is actually the fifth game in the Nikki series, though it’s the first to come to consoles, with previous entries only ever available on mobile devices.
Despite the similarities, it’s a very different beast to the more action orientated titles from miHoYo, another Chinese company that’s gained quite the stranglehold on this market of free-to-play gacha adventure games.
Aside from Genshin Impact, it’s enjoyed success with Honkai: Star Rail and, more recently, Zenless Zone Zero; all of which offer different flavours of role-playing gameplay but otherwise make their money through microtransactions.
