Fans baffled after discovering they’ve been pronouncing iconic 00s band name wrong-Danni Scott-Entertainment – Metro

In 2008, a new band shot up the charts with hit song Electric Feel but it turns out we’ve been calling them the wrong thing this entire time.

They were nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, with Justice’s version of their hit track winning Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

Since then, the American duo have become firm favourites on any 00s or Indie playlist with five studio albums to their name.

But turns out that name is not what we thought it was. This entire time, we’ve been pronouncing MGMT wrong (sort of).

For almost 20 years, fans have been calling them ‘M G M T’, pronouncing each individual letter but they’re actually called ‘The Management’.

A resurfaced clip of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser introducing themselves in 2003 left fans in shock over the pronunciation.

‘The Management? I’ve been calling them MGMT my whole life, their name is the Management?’ said Ryan O’Malley in a viral TikTok.

Jokingly he added: ‘Is AC/DC the aqueduct? What the f…’

The AC/DC name actually came from a symbol on founding members Angus Young and his brother, Malcolm—who died at age 64 in 2017 — sister’s sewing machine’s AC adapter.

The brothers felt it was a perfect symbolisation of the raw energy the band projected and their power-driven music performances, and thus, AC/DC was born.

When asked what Ryan thought MGMT stood for, another user replied that they hadn’t even considered it was an abbreviation.

‘To be honest I thought it stood for MGMT,’ responded K with plenty of other people agreeing they had thought the ‘same’.

‘I work in HR. I’ve called them Management for years as a joke. Joke’s on me, I guess?’ said Dave, to which Ryan said he was ‘streets ahead’.

‘That’s Meanage Gutant Minja Turtles,’ joked Eco Joe — we’ll be thinking about this one for a while.

However, fans need not feel too embarrassed as it turns out the group did actually change their name before the peak of their fame.

‘That’s from when they first started,’ reassured Charlie. ‘They changed it to MGMT because there was already a band called The Management. It’s 100% pronounced “MGMT” now.’

While they were the Management for their two demo album recordings when the Kids hitmakers signed to their label, they had to swap to MGMT.

In 2008, Vulture approached their publicist and was reassured it’s definitely now pronounced ‘Em Gee Em Tee’.

The more you know.
