Featuring an energetic pop rock riff and iconic lyrics, Misfit was one of the biggest songs of 2003, and now the songstress behind it is back – but you’ll have to pick her out of an identity parade first.

Amy Studt, 38, contributed to the soundtrack of a generation with Misfit, the second single from her debut album, False Smiles.

This album gave Amy two Top 10 hits in the UK charts, including the song Under The Thumb, which released at no.10 in September 2003.

The musician recently made a shock reappearance on an episode of the Sky Max comedy panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, hosted by Greg Davies and featuring Noel Fielding and Jamali Maddix as panel members.

And, as a member of the long-running panel show’s Identity Parade round – in which panel members have to pick out now-obscure musicians from a line-up – Amy made her unexpected return to the screen.

‘That was Amy Studt with Misfit,’ said Greg as he introduced a clip of the music video, describing it as ‘an insanely catchy tune.’

As she stood alongside four other similarly-dressed decoys, the panel – including Gossip’s Beth Ditto, Nick Grimshaw and So Solid Crew’s Megaman – did their best to find the real Amy.

Stood at number two in the line up, Amy braved the vicious tongue of comedian and former Taskmaster contestant Jamali Maddix, who described her as ‘scary,’ saying she ‘looks like she works in a gulag.’

Unaware that he was speaking of the real Amy Studt, Jamali went on to say: ‘She looks like she stares through someone’s kitchen window.’

‘She saw a video of her husband cheating and her face never changed,’ he joked, as Amy struggled to keep a straight face.

Posting the segment to her Instagram page, Amy described her decision to take part in the panel show.

‘A little while ago I took myself off to film in an episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks in their line up game for their 00’s special. After a little considering I decided that having professional comedians take the piss out of me on telly sounded like a lot of fun and I was gonna do everything I could to win the game of not laughing,’ Amy wrote.

‘If you don’t know the game, the line ups are tested to stay emotionless whilst the comedians do everything they can to make you laugh. Here’s what happened.

‘I did it with no ulterior motives only that it would be fun and me and my hubby drove up to London and were treated so nicely. Such a great team on this show and behind the scenes. Enjoy!

Fans of 00s pop rock were appropriately respectful of an icon’s return, sharing their shock on social media as the segment aired.

‘Not AMY STUDT on the ID parade on buzzcocks! Let’s not pretend that record was not one of the best records of the noughties! Misfit, under the thumb, ladder in my tights YAAAAAAS,’ wrote jenlouisey_ on X.

‘I full on shrieked when they started playing Misfit before turning to my husband and excitedly repeating it’s number 2, it’s number 2. Was so lovely to see you on tv, have adored your music ever since it came out 🖤’ said evilyxa, commenting on Amy’s post.

‘This episode was the only one I’ve ever got the line up guest right 🙌’ said glorifiedcabaret.

‘Watched this and now listening again to your album! Loved it back then and sounding so good today!’ exclaimed hrparchitects.

Fans may have been quick to recognise the real Amy Studt, but the panel were less successful, and they were left shocked when she finally revealed herself as no.2.

All, that is, except Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto, who exclaimed: ‘I knew it!’

When asked what she is up to now, Amy revealed that she is ‘still doing music’ but ‘enjoying being a mum.’

The musician released three albums in total, including the 2008 follow-up to her debut album My Paper Made Men, and 2019’s Happiest Girl in the Universe.

Her absence from the public eye between 2009 and her comeback in 2017 came amid a nervous breakdown and her diagnosis with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder and a non-associative anxiety disorder.

She is still performing live – while also working on a fourth studio album. writing on Instagram last year, Amy said: ‘NEWS! I’ve been keeping quiet for a while but I’m humbly announcing that my new, 4th record is now written and has begun the recording process.

‘This is me in the studio earlier this week,’ she wrote, sharing a pic from behind the scenes of her studio recording. ‘Yes!’
