Eminem omitted a controversial lyric from one of his hit 2000s songs following the death of his mother Debbie Nelson.

Nelson died aged 69 on December 2 after it was reported she was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer earlier this year.

The rapper – real name Marshall Mathers – has not yet addressed the news, but his half-brother Nathan Mathers posted a short message to Instagram following the news, which read: ‘Hatred and mixed emotions today.’

Less than a week since his loss, the 52-year-old musician headlined the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 7 to perform to around 40,000 fans.

Among his hit-filled setlist was the 2002 single Without Me, which features the lyric ‘f**k you Debbie’ in reference to his mother and their difficult relationship over the years.

During the performance, Eminem omitted this lyric from the song as reported by The Daily Mail.

Eminem and Nelson had a tumultuous relationship, with the singer’s 1999 song My Name Is taking aim at his mother, accusing her of drug addiction and abusive behaviour.

Nelson sued her son for defamation due to the content of the lyrics but later settled out of court for $25,000 (£19,000).

Following the lawsuit, Nelson released her own track titled Dear Marshall (An Open Letter to Eminem)’ which featured the scathing lyric: ‘Will the real Marshall Mathers please stand up / And take responsibility for his actions?’

In 2008, Nelson vowed to never give up on her children in a rare comment on their fractured relationship.

‘I’m not ever going to give up on my kids. I won’t give up on anybody,’ she told Village Voice.

‘There’s hope for everybody. It’s a matter of just basically swallowing your pride. It’s like a cashed check. It’s over, it’s done. You need to move on.’

Eminem released Headlights in 2013, which he used to apologise to his mother for his public comments about their relationship.

‘I went in headfirst, never thinking about who what I said hurt,’ he rapped. ‘My mom probably got it the worst.

‘And I’m mad I didn’t get the chance to thank you for being my mom and my dad. So Mom, please accept this as a tribute I wrote on this jet.’

Nelson later publicly celebrated Eminem’s success in 2022 when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
