Golden Globes nominations infuriate fans as director of $450,000,000 blockbuster snubbed-Rishma Dosani-Entertainment – Metro
We’re holding space for this…
Wicked earned a string of Golden Globes nominations – including nods for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande (Picture: WireImage)
The nominations for the Golden Globes 2025 are officially in and there are some expected nods in the mix – as well as some very surprising snubs.
Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut were on hand to deliver the news earlier today, ahead of the ceremony on January 5.
Emilia Perez led the way with a whopping 10 nominations, including acting mentions for lead stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez – with the latter also in the best actress category for her iconic TV series, Only Murders in the Building.
Ariana Grande also landed her very first Golden Globe nomination thanks to her efforts as Glinda in Wicked, and was tipped for the best performance by a female actor in a supporting role award.
Her co-star, Cynthia Erivo, earned a mention in the category for best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy, and will be going up against Karla, Amy Adams, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore and Zendaya.
However, while we’ve been holding space for all things Defying Gravity, Jon M Chu was snubbed from the best director category, along with Dune: Part Two filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.

Instead, Jacques Audiard, Sean Baker, Edward Berger, Brady Corbet, Coralie Fargeat and Payal Kapadia will be battling it out for the trophy.
This came as a huge shock to many as Wicked has raked in more than $450million at the box office so far, while Dune 2 topped $700million worldwide.
Dune: Part Two did get two nominations for best original score and best motion picture (drama), but the director and actors Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya were not recognized for their roles.
Fans flocked to social media to unpack the news, sharing their devastation for both Jon and Denis.

Tercia da Silva tweeted: ‘Jon Chu not being nominated has officially ruined my day #GoldenGlobes
Elizabeth M agreed: ‘Wait-did the #GoldenGlobes completely neglect to nominate Jon M. Chu???? Seriously????’
Paciouspolca yelled: ‘WOAH????? NO JON M. CHU AND DENIS VILLENEUVE FOR DIRECTOR!!!!!!! #GoldenGlobes.’
Sic fumed: ‘THIS DENIS SNUB SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.’
Instagram user ChikenButt4894 suggested that Denis’ lack of a mention was the ‘worst snub I’ve seen in my life’.
Over on Reddit, Justinmcp wrote: ‘Criminal how Denis Villeneuve didn’t get nominated.’
As DontBeAngryBeHappy suggested: ‘Now that Dune is getting a full trilogy, I wonder if it’s going to get the LOTR Trilogy treatment and give most/all the awards for the third film, especially since Denis Villeneuve didn’t get a Dir nom.
‘It’s good to sop both Timothy and Zendaya get noms but for different movies [sic].’
Fans also called for Hard Truths’ Marianne Jean-Baptiste to get a mention (Picture: Getty)
Film fans also called out the lack of recognition Marianne Jean-Baptiste after she won big at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) and the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) for her role in Hard Truths.
Twitter user Shank said: ‘No Marianne nom for The Golden Globes when she was leading all the critics awards is insane!!!’
‘There are some really strong nominations today from the Globes, but Marianne Jean Baptiste not getting one sticks out like a sore thumb. What happened?,’ Matty M questioned.
As Notdettyp added: ‘they really did Marianne Jean-Baptiste dirty :((.’
Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White were tipped for the Bear (Picture: FilmMagic)
Selena Gomez was nominated for both Emelia Perez and Only Murders in the Building – alongside her Hulu co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin (Picture: WireImage)
On the TV side of the nominations, it was a big day for The Bear with five nods – including best comedy series and acting mentions for Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas.
Selena’s Only Murders co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were also tipped for their efforts in Only Murders in the Building, and will be facing off in the best actor category against Jeremy, Jason Segel, Ted Danson and Adam Brody.
