Former Bond girl Gemma Arterton has said that she thinks a female James Bond would be ‘too outrageous.’

The 38-year-old, who played Strawberry Fields in the 2008 James Bond film Quantum of Solace, thinks that ‘tradition’ needs to be respected regarding the beloved spy franchise.

‘They talk about it, but I think people would find it too outrageous,’ she told The Times when asked about the possibility of a female Bond. ‘Sometimes you just have to respect the tradition.’

She shared that she’s found the continued focus on her role in the Bond film confusing, given that it’s not among her most significant parts.

‘I don’t regret doing a Bond film, but I am perplexed why it has followed me around. I was only in the film for five minutes,’ she continued.

Arterton’s character was an intelligence operative working for the British Secret Service and affiliated to the British consulate in Bolivia. She was actually not the main Bond girl in the film, with the character of Camille Montes (played by Olga Kurylenko) taking the spot of the primary romantic interest.

Bond and Fields go undercover in the film, ultimately staying in a hotel together where Bond seduces his fellow agent.

When asked about the part by Metro, she said: ‘I loved making Quantum Of Solace –
and I’m still friends with people on it.

‘The legacy of it was something
I didn’t expect. I was quite naive and didn’t really grow up watching Bond films, so I didn’t know how big a deal it was at the time’

In another interview with The Sun in 2020 she said: ‘At the beginning of my career, I was poor as a church mouse and I was happy just to be able to work and earn a living. I still get criticism for accepting Quantum Of Solace, but I was 21, I had a student loan, and you, know, it was a Bond film.’

She continued: ‘But as I got older I realised there was so much wrong with Bond women. Strawberry should have just said no, really, and worn flat shoes.’

Arterton isn’t the only one who has regrets about Quantum of Solace.

Recently, Daniel Craig also spoke about the 2008 film, saying it should have never been made in the first place.

Speaking on the Awards Chatter podcast, he recalled: ‘[Quantum of Solace] was the difficult second album — [it was] a f*****g nightmare.

‘[Film writer and producer] Paul Haggis did a pass on the script. Then he went off and joined the picket line and we didn’t have writers.’

Daniel was referring to the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike, which affected the production of numerous films and TV shows for three months.

‘We should never have started production,’ he explained. ‘I ended up writing a lot of that film, which I probably shouldn’t say.

‘There are some amazing stunt sequences in it but it just didn’t quite work. The storytelling wasn’t there. That’s a lesson — starting a movie without a script is not a good idea.’
