Rockstar’s next game will apparently have less throwaway jokes against transgender people and other minorities, as GTA 6 continues to loom over 2025’s release schedule.

One of the big questions surrounding GTA 6 is how it will handle the series’ staple satire of American culture, especially following the departure of Rockstar co-founder and writer Dan Houser and the re-election of Donald Trump.

Despite having a whole trailer to dissect, we still know relatively little about GTA 6. It takes place in Leonida, a fictionalised version of Florida complete with the Miami-inspired Vice City, and will feature female protagonist Lucia along with an unnamed male partner. And that’s about all we know for sure.

While the first trailer struck a tone largely in keeping with the series’ traditions, it seems Rockstar might be taking a more thoughtful approach when it comes to representing minority groups in GTA 6.

According to a Bloomberg report, Rockstar ‘is asking its writers to be less crude toward transgender people and other minorities’ in the sequel, who have been ‘common targets of throwaway gags’ in previous titles.

In 2022, Rockstar quietly removed perceived transphobic content in the re-release of GTA 5 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, including a Captain Spacetoy action figure which originally had ‘interchangeable genitalia’, and trans caricatures that would spawn outside the Cockatoos nightclub.

These changes were never officially acknowledged by Rockstar but they seemingly came about following a campaign from LGBTQ+ games industry group Out Making Games, who penned a letter to the developer requesting the removal of ‘extremely harmful stereotypes’.

If true, it’s likely Rockstar will continue this same approach with GTA 6, although it remains to be seen how much this will impact the representation of other minorities in-game – especially as GTA is hardly known for its subtlety.

Elsewhere in the Bloomberg report, it’s claimed publishers are holding back release dates for its games in order not to clash with GTA 6, which has a vague release window of autumn 2025.

‘The publishers want to see whether GTA 6 will make its deadline or slip into 2026,’ the report notes, adding, ‘and they’re determined to keep their own games far, far away’.

Take-Two has affirmed multiple times that GTA 6 is on track for autumn next year, but Rockstar hasn’t released any update about the title since its first trailer in December 2023.

It’s possible we could see another glimpse during The Game Awards on Friday, December 13, but if we don’t hear anything this year, suspicions of a potential delay might rear their head once again.
