Rhod Gilbert has shared a health update two years after being diagnosed with cancer.

The comedian, 56, revealed in 2022 that he was being treated for stage four head and neck cancer, after suffering from a sore throat and problems with swallowing.

He underwent treatment in Cardiff and has begun to return to the limelight after being given the all-clear, however, in a new interview, Rhod revealed he’s still struggling with some health problems and has issues with his taste.

The Welsh star shared that since his diagnosis, having given up smoking years ago, he’s now ‘cut down’ on alcohol.

‘I guess I’m a bit more conscious now than what I was, but equally, cancer leaves you in this weird place where you want to grab life by the short and curlies.’

He went on to The Mirror to say he feels ‘very lucky’ to have regained a lot of his taste back, but some things still taste ‘weird’, including water and even cups of tea.

‘Everything is disgusting,’ he went on, adding: ‘I’m still left with some problems, so tea still tastes a bit odd, lots of things taste weird still.

‘My taste is almost, sort of 80 per cent back to normal, my swallowing is pretty good, but at the time, you can’t swallow and everything tastes disgusting.

‘Food is horrible, I mean you’re being fed by a machine straight into your stomach, with head and neck cancer quite often, because you can’t swallow as it’s too painful.’

He added that he ‘feels great’ and his ‘really happy’ to return to the stage for his new tour.

‘I can’t believe really quite how well I feel, I’ve got problems in my neck, throat area and my mouth area, but other than that, I feel great,’ Rhod said.

During his first TV appearance after announcing his diagnosis publicly, Rhod said on The One Show in October last year that he was ‘happy to be alive’.

At the time, he said he was still having checks in hospital ‘every few weeks’ but was delighted to be returning to the stage for his new show, Rhod Gilbert & The Giant Grapefruit.

‘I’ll always have symptoms and things, from head and neck cancer, the treatment’s quite rough, there’ll always be the niggly symptoms but, broadly, I feel wonderful!’ he declared at the time.
