Austin Butler has been cast in American Psycho and is set to play Patrick Bateman – but fans are less than convinced by his casting.
After various rumours about who would be cast in the remake of American Psycho, it has been reported that Austin, 33, has been cast.
The original film was released in 2000 but set in the 1980s with Christian Bale playing Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street yuppie and serial killer.
The remake is set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, best known for his work on Call Me By Your Name, Queer, and Challengers.
The announcement from Variety read: ‘Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino‘s new interpretation of the book “American Psycho” by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate.’
The news has sparked a debate on social media as fans have one major complaint about the news.

Taking to social media, fans have pointed out that a major issue with this series is that the 2000 movie isn’t dated and is a perfect specimen – so there’s no need for a remake after just 24 years.
‘Noooooooo!! Leave that masterpiece alone!! No one will ever be better than the original Patrick Bateman,’ said txpureblood.
‘I feel like the original does not need a remake. Stop with the regurgitating and make new, quality films,’ said Sim1_N.
‘Everyone is freaking out at Austin Butler being cast as Patrick Bateman but do we really need a remake in the first place…’ said Gracelovesfilms.
‘If they had to remake American Psycho, this is good casting. But they don’t have to remake American Psycho…’ said royal_bobby24.

Other fans on social media also pointed out that Austin Butler, an actor who has starred in Elvis, Dune : Part 2, and Masters of the Air, perhaps didn’t have the sinister look required for the role.
‘Austin butler for the new american psycho movie? he doesn’t even look the part lol,’ Angelcasimiro commented.
‘I’m sure austin butler will do a good job acting but he does not look like a finance bro in the slightest,’ said ASquirrel22.
‘Again, Christian Bale works so well as Patrick Bateman in large part because of the fact he’s able to simultaneously be attractive but also have that slight psychotic look in his eyes. I don’t know if that’s a look Austin Butler can pull off,’ said duncetwt.

After portraying Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s film Elvis in 2022, the actor won the Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
The actor also fully transformed for his role as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in the science fiction film Dune: Part Two in 2024 which also earned him significant praise.
He’s set to be on screens again soon in black comedy movie Eddington and crime thriller Caught Stealing.
