Noddy Holder has explained he is ‘living life day to day’ six years after being told he only had six months to live.

The Slade frontman, 78, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2018 and given the bombshell diagnosis that he wouldn’t survive beyond a few months.

After undergoing experimental chemotherapy treatment Noddy ‘responded well’, with his cancer diagnosis revealed publicly for the first time last year.

Now, six years on from his devastating diagnosis, Noddy has shared an update on his health.

In an interview on BBC Breakfast on Thursday, where he spoke about his band’s hit single Merry Xmas Everybody, Noddy was asked how he was going by hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt.

‘I’m OK. I’m on a level playing field. I’m doing alright,’ he shared.

After Naga said it was a ‘very different story five years ago’, Noddy continued.

‘Five years ago, I was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer and given six months for live but luckily for me I was given a heavy bout of chemo which was very targeted. They hadn’t tried it on anyone over 60 at the time but asked me if I’d give it a try and I was 72 at that point and luckily for me I am still here five years later.

‘They never say you’re cured. They keep a check on it.’

Speaking to BBC in another interview this week, Noddy admitted he’d been ‘more worried for my missus and my kids and my grandkids than I was for me’.

‘I do live life day to day, and I thought well I’ve done a lot of good stuff in my life, I’ve had a lot of fun if the end is within sight in six months, I’ll see it through,’ he said.

Noddy’s cancer diagnosis was revealed by his wife Suzan in her monthly column for Cheshire Life magazine last year.

‘We coped with it the only way we could, by hunkering down, sticking together and doing everything we could to survive it,’ she wrote.

Suzan then added experts ‘never like to use the word cure’ but her husband was ‘feeling good and looking great’.

Speaking to The Big Issue, Noddy later explained he decided to keep his condition private, except to family and close friends, as he didn’t want people to ‘think of me as a cancer victim’.

He also explained how he ‘lost all my hair’ and saw his weight plummet to eight stone.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
