Creator of Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus returns with secret new game-GameCentral-Entertainment – Metro

What is going on here? (YouTube)

Fumito Ueda is set to return to gaming, with a new title that looks a lot like The Last Guardian but is almost certainly not a PS5 exclusive.

It’s eight years now since the The Last Of Guardian was released and we’ve heard virtually nothing from creator Fumito Ueda since then, but he’s finally broken his silence with the release of a brand new game trailer at The Game Awards 2024.

The game doesn’t have a name yet (the phrase Project: Robot can be seen in the end credits but that’s probably just a codename) but it certainly seems reminiscent of Ueda’s previous work on classics such as Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus.

It’s unlikely to have any direct connection to those games though as Ueda left Sony years ago and only completed The Last Guardian as a freelancer. That means the new game, whatever it’s called, is likely to be multiformat but unfortunately there’s so far no details on that or its release date.

The game is being developed by Ueda’s studio GenDesign and shows a character reminiscent of the ones in his previous games climbing up what is eventually revealed to be a giant robot – one that’s a bit more obviously sci-fi than the colossi in his previous games.

What’s going on isn’t all that clear, but the trailer starts with a countdown that the player character seems to have set off, or at least has anticipated.

The seems to be related to a shockwave of energy, which the character avoids (or not, it’s not entirely certain what happens at the end) by getting into the robot’s head and ripping off its head by launching into the air.

When will Fumito Ueda’s untitled next game be released?

There doesn’t seem to be anything else obvious to take away from the trailer but while there’s no indication of a release date, there’s been enough of a wait since Ueda’s last game that it seems reasonable to hope this will be out relatively soon.

The game is being published by Fortnite creators Epic Games, which alone seems to rule out the possibility of this being a PlayStation exclusive or having any official connection to the previous games. The fact that the trailer has been posted on the official Xbox YouTube channel seems to confirm that.

Ueda himself wasn’t at The Game Awards so hopefully that’s a hint that he’ll introduce the game personally at some point next year, possibly during one of the Xbox or PlayStation (or Nintendo) showcases that are bound to take place early in 2025.
