Josh Brolin has reflected on his wild drug trip as a teenager, revealing that he ended up having a deep conversation with a fireplace.
The 56-year-old has been in the spotlight for decades, thanks to roles in the Goonies, No Country for Old Men, Sicario, Dune and the Avengers.
During a new interview, the 56-year-old – father of Hollywood legend James Brolin and Jane Cameron Agee – opened up about his younger years, including the moment he took LSD at the age of 13.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host questioned him over how exactly he happened to get his hands on the drug at such a young age.
‘I don’t know how it happens, man,’ he laughed. ‘You have parents, where are the parents? Did they give it to me, did they misplace a sugar cube, I don’t know.
‘I was with my buddies, who I grew up with in Santa Barbara … we started LSD very early on, and then that turned into a band, called Rich Kids on LSD (RKL).
‘I had a great trip. I had the most amazing – 13 years old, your brain is still developing. It’s probably not the best time to start that drug, but I really had an amazing time.’
‘I saw a fireplace talking to me who said some nice things,’ Josh told Jimmy of the trip. ‘I liked what he said. I didn’t dislike what he said. It was like caressing, it was wisdom.
‘We went through the whole thing, I was like, “Wow, it was a revelation”. Somebody that night said we should do it again.
‘Because, like a drunk, when you do alcohol you go, “Let’s go to the bar and let’s do it again,” the next night, and the next night and the next.

‘So, I was in the habit of doing things again. That trip was not so good. No nice conversation. It was a lot of fire, but not a fireplace.’
When asked if he would ‘dissuade’ his 13-year-old self from taking LSD if he were to go back, he added: ‘You can’t put me in that position. Because it’s like every 13-year-old watching your show – because it’s your biggest demographic – do not do LSD. Do not do LSD, children.
‘It was the greatest thing I ever did.’
Josh struggled with sobriety as a teenager, and previously shared that he found himself at ‘bottom and far worse’ when he was just 15 years old.

After battling alcohol issues for years, he decided to get completely sober in 2013, after visiting his grandmother on her deathbed in hospital
‘I was supposed to have picked up my brother and taken them, because I was the one in the family that put everything together, structured everything and controlled everything,’ he told Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson on their Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast.
‘I woke up on the sidewalk, went inside. My brother called me. “Where are you?” Picked him up, walked into that hospital eventually.
‘Everybody knew when I walked into the room, picked her head up and looked at me and smiled and that was it. ‘I was done. I said, “If this woman could get through 99 years on life’s terms, how dare me?”

‘I’d gotten away with, I was 45 years old and I’d gotten away with a lot, been in jail nine times, done a little bit of whatever.
‘So I thought, I wonder if I could do that half of life like that and then do this half of life like this. Then I get to live two lives and not just one.’
Shedding light on how his life has changed since that moment, Josh added: ‘I feel like something’s been cultivated in me that I helped cultivate that, that my life now is better than my greatest romance of any drink I could have.
‘I actually like my life. Not that I didn’t before, because I loved it before, except when I would write indecipherable texts. That – I didn’t like that.’
