A TV show that received critical acclaim, which many have called one of the ‘best ever’, has suffered a huge snub that’s left fans furious.

In 2021, the first season of the adult animated series Arcane was released on Netflix, revolving around the story of sisters Vi and Jinx, characters originally from Riot’s video game franchise League of Legends.

The dystopian drama immediately blew fans away with its spectacular visuals, gripping storytelling and killer soundtrack, elements that remained when it returned this year with its second and final season.

Last night, The Game Awards took place in Los Angeles, honouring video games including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Astro Bot, Helldivers 2, and Metaphor: ReFantazio.

One category at the awards ceremony was for best adaptation, with the nominees including Arcane, the Amazon Prime Video series Fallout, the Paramount Plus TV series Knuckles, the Amazon Prime Video series Like a Dragon: Yakuza and the Netflix animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

Given the rave reviews Arcane has received from fans and critics alike, including scores of people saying it’s unlike any programme they’ve ever watched and completely in a league of its own, some might have assumed it would be a shoo-in to take home the prize.

However, Fallout ended up being crowned the winner, much to Arcane fans’ shock and disappointment.

While Fallout has been hailed as a brilliant show with a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, many felt that Arcane was more deserving of the best adaptation accolade.

‘The possibility Arcane wouldn’t win best adaptation didn’t even occur to me,’ @LUZL0VER wrote on X, while @ThayIsTired said: ‘Can’t believe Arcane didn’t win best adaptation…’

‘No hate to Fallout it was great but Arcane was honestly robbed for best adaptation. This last season was a literal cinematic masterpiece 😤,’ @giselleb1234 wrote.

X user @rchelamber claimed that the result ‘had to be a joke’, while @nurmmss said that they felt ‘robbed’ by the winner.

‘How the hell did Fallout beat Arcane for best game adaptation ain’t no way,’ @InfernoOmni asked, as @zastelatv quipped Arcane not winning the category was ‘rigged’.

‘Don’t get me wrong Fallout was good but over Arcane?????? I am literally just confused,’ @OctaSpla2n stated.

‘Arcane is literally one of the best series ever my god what the hell. It’s rated so high all across the board how does that happen.’

Arcane is set in the fictional city of Piltover, where there’s a major class struggle between the upper class and those who are living in oppressed conditions in the underbelly of Zaun.

The tale has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and while it might not have won best adaptation at the Game Awards, that certainly doesn’t take away from the impact it’s had on viewers around the world.

While the second season is the end for the show, it isn’t the last time fans will revisit this franchise on the small screen, as other spin-offs on characters from the League of Legends universe are currently in development.

(And fingers crossed some of our favourite Arcane characters could pop up too!).

All was not lost for Arcane fans at the Game Awards, as Ella Purnell – who voices Jinx in the series – is also the lead star in Fallout, playing the role of Lucy in the post-apocalyptic adventure.

The awards ceremony also included a musical tribute to Arcane, with d4vd performing Remember Me, Royal & the Serpent performing Wasteland and Twenty One Pilots appearing to perform The Line.

Arcane is available to watch on Netflix.
