The creator of It Takes Two has revealed his new game, and it looks to be a very similar style of co-op adventure with a sci-fi and fantasy theme.

Given the daily leaks that almost every other corner of the games industry is subject to, it’s strange that almost nothing was spoiled about The Game Awards 2024 before it happened. One of the few exceptions was Split Fiction, the new game from It Takes Two creator Josef Fares.

The only reason that leaked is because it’s out surprisingly soon, on March 6, with Fares’ potty-mouthed reveal making it clear that the basics are still very similar to It Takes Two, with a boast of a unique gameplay mechanic for every level.

As the name suggests, the game uses a similar split-screen effect to It Takes Two but with a completely new story featuring two writers who end up being stuck in the same virtual reality world that is designed to recreate their fictional worlds – one fantasy themed and the other sci-fi.

Although the mechanics are intended to be different each level – you can see everything from snowboarding to being trapped on a giant’s axe in the trailer – there seems to be an emphasis on evolving the scenario from one level to another, rather than it being completely different each time.

So, for example, in one level you find some dragon eggs and hatch them, then in the next level the dragons are bigger and can crawl around on the ground shooting what looks like acid out of their mouths. Then, in the level after that, they’re fully grown and you’re able to fly on their backs.

Another example involves rolling around inside a Metroid style morph ball, before it breaks apart and turns into an exosuit for you in the next level. Fares also talked about a level where you play as a pig and then a sausage but we’re not sure if that was supposed to be a joke or not.

When will Split Fiction be released?

Split Fiction will be released on March 6 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Unlike almost all the other games at The Games Awards it was playable on the night, so there doesn’t seem much chance of a delay (it probably would’ve been announced earlier but we suspect Fares was waiting for the awards show to reveal it, as he’s a pal of presenter Geoff Keighley).

As with It Takes Two, you’ll only need to buy one copy of the game to play with a friend, so you don’t both have to pay in order to enjoy the online co-op. With It Takes Two that involved sharing a code that the one that does buy it is free to give to whoever they like – which is a very welcome money-saving feature.
