Tom Selleck has opened up about one of his biggest TV shows coming to an end after 14 years, and his alternate vision for his iconic character.

Today marks the series finale of Blue Bloods, with the last episode airing on CBS at 10pm – it will also be available to stream on Paramount +.

The 79-year-old, who also lit up the screen in Friends, Three Men and a Baby, Magnum PI and many more over the years, publicly slammed the decision to axe the police drama – which also stars Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, he was asked about the perfect goodbye for Frank Reagan in the final instalment, aptly titled End Of Tour.

‘I thought about that. I didn’t really have input in where the show was going for a final episode,’ he replied.

‘I think in my alternate ending, the result on the audience would be that Frank Reagan remains a man alone, who never wanted the job he had, that has a hyperactive sense of responsibility, and I think he’d be commissioner till he drops.’

Tom previously touched on whether he would love a spin-off, and suggested that he would rather reprise another one of his huge roles next instead.

Blue Bloods first premiered in 2010 and followed the many members of a fictional family in New York, including police officer Danny Reagan (Donnie) and Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), led by patriarch Commissioner Frank.

Will Estes, Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez, Vanessa Ray and Sami Gayle also make up the cast.

Despite still boasting millions of views per episode, TV bosses decided to cancel the hit show last November, leading to a huge outcry from the cast, as well as heartbroken fans.

Hours before the last ever episode premieres, viewers rushed to Twitter to share their heartache, while also thanking the cast for their hard work.

Brian Foor tweeted: ‘Tonight is the series finale of #BlueBloods I know it’s gonna be emotional [sic].’

Chantina Faison agreed: ‘I’m so sad tonight is the last night of Blue Bloods. Friday nights are not going to be the same.

‘I can’t wait to see how we end 14 seasons of greatness. See you all tonight. #Bittersweet #BlueBloods @DonnieWahlberg @BlueBloods_CBS.’

Mary wrote: ‘I can’t believe tonight is the final episode of Blue Bloods.. I’m so sad that it’s actually ending. I have to keep reminding myself this is yet. it’s end of an era. #BlueBloods #endofanera.’

Michele posted: ‘Well this is the day a lot of us has dreaded. The last and final episode of #BlueBloods. All I can say is thank you for giving us the absolutely best entertainment on Fridays! You all will be so incredibly missed.’

As JamkoThoughts added: ‘It’s a bittersweet #BlueBloods Friday The show holds a special place in our hearts; we care about the characters and we’re so grateful for the excellent cast & the crew that created magic. #BlueBloodsCryDay.’

Speaking to TV Line ahead of the finale, Tom declared that it will take him a ‘long time’ to get over the role of a lifetime.

‘I’m kind of frustrated,’ he said. ‘During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.

‘I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, “Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,” it would be almost impossible to believe.

‘My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So, how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.’
