Viewers have slammed a decision to air the trailer for the next season of a series during its finale.
The British political thriller The Day of the Jackal stars Eddie Redmayne as the titular character, described as an ‘unrivalled and highly elusive lone assassin who makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee’.
However, he faces a rival in British intelligence officer Bianca (Lashana), who began a ‘thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake’ when trying to track him down.
Based on 1971 book by Frederick Forsyth, the 10-episode series was dubbed by some as ‘the best of the year’, with the finale airing this week.
However, some fans have been left shocked after both a major character was killed off and the trailer for season 2 ‘spoiled’ another major plot point.
In the final episode, Bianca closes in on the Jackal’s secret family home in Spain and appears to have gained the upper hand however after he manages to hide in a secret room he then re-emerges and in shocking scenes, shoots and kills her.

The final moments showed her being hit in the chest by a bullet and dropping to the ground, with blood then seen trickling out of her mouth while he watches on.
Although some were heartbroken at Bianca’s ‘brutal’ demise, others said the jaw-dropping twist had them glued to their screens.
‘Damn! They done did Bianca dirty in The Day of Jackal episode finale,’ Zek posted on X.
‘I didn’t see that ending coming in The Day of the Jackal. I never expected Bianca to be crippled like that. Nevertheless, it was a great show with a fantastic ending. I would give it a 9/10. Season 2 is going to be great, obviously,’ Flotee_ shared.
‘Didn’t expect this ending from The Day of the Jackal. 10/10 I must say,’ Quado added.

Many others said the ending ‘caught them off guard’ and they were ‘still processing’ what unfolded.
But the decision to air the trailer for season 2 frustrated many tuning in, as it revealed the Jackal was still alive despite the finale teasing he might die.
‘Whoever it was at @skytv who decided to put a MASSIVE spoiler bedded into the middle ad break of the finale episode of Day of the Jackal needs a serious meeting with their line manager. Brilliant series, destroyed ending!’ MrMacKenzieVer1 fumed.
‘Who in @skytv decided to put a massive spoiler into the ad break of the season finale Day of the Jackal needs to be the Jackal’s next target. FFS! Ruined what otherwise was a great episode,’ mckennaniall posted.

‘Watched the final Day of the Jackal last night. What a bad decision to announce series 2 in between the last part/ad break of series 1! Gave away the ending and the fact he lived!’ loggy01 added.
In the original novel and the 1973 film adaptation, it was the Jackal who was the one who died, leaving fans of the source material even more shocked.
Speaking about the twist, Eddie told GQ he’d been alerted to what would happen before reading the script.
‘I knew it was coming because I’d been told it was before I read it. It’s so shocking in the movie, because the Jackal’s killed like that, and he’s gone. It’s so matter of fact,’ he said.

However, speaking about Bianca’s death, he said it was ‘shocking but also paid homage to her tenacity and brilliance’.
‘What I find really curious about that moment is, firstly, it was virtually the first time Lashana and I were on set together; secondly, the characters really do not know each other, but through Bianca’s relentless pursuit, he has admiration for her. And [there’s] that idea of them being two sides of the same coin,’ he said.
It was announced last month that the series had already been renewed for a second season, with the show also being nominated for two Golden Globe Awards this week.
It’s also become the biggest Sky Original ever and the biggest launch on Sky in over two years, drawing a record audience of three million in the week after it was released.
Metro has contacted Sky for comment.
The Day of the Jackal is streaming on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
