Gavin and Stacey surprise trailer hints at Nessa and Smithy romance after five-year wait-Emily Bashforth-Entertainment – Metro

Oh! Stop what you’re doing! We have our first trailer for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.

As if the Strictly Come Dancing 2024 final couldn’t get more exciting, Ruth Jones, aka the iconic Nessa, made a surprise appearance to read out the terms and conditions (in character, of course).

It was then that Claudia Winkleman introduced an exclusive first look at the upcoming finale, and fans reckon the future of Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa’s relationship could have been confirmed.

The trailer opens with Stacey (Joanna Page) speaking on the phone with husband Gavin (Mathew Horne) while at work, just like old times, in a nod to how they met in the early 2000s.

‘Oh, I’m absolutely buzzing, I am. A whole weekend away, just me and you!’, Stacey says.

‘Well, yeah, except it’s not just me and you, is it?’, Gavin replies, before the characters we all know and love appear.

Will we finally find out what happened on the fishing trip? (Picture: BBC)

In chimes Smithy, nicknaming his best mate as ‘Gaviscon,’ while Pam (Alison Steadman) and Mick (Larry Lamb) prepare their table for the in-laws to enjoy a Christmas feast.

Pam has her rollers in, naturally, and is dressed in pink, flapping around while husband ‘Michael’ strolls leisurely around.

Of course, it doesn’t take long for the drama to ensue, as Nessa seems to give a stern word of warning to her son, Neil the Baby, who is played by the same actor as the original newborn.

‘Pass me those nunchucks,’ she tells Stacey, proving she’s still a mother who takes zero messing around.

Meanwhile, Gwen (Melanie Walters) brings up that infamous fishing trip to Bryn and Jason, accusing them of ‘tearing the family apart’.

Perhaps we’ll finally get to learn what actually went down all those years ago this time?

Pete and Dawn fans are also in luck, as they’re back with their bickering, as Dawn brands her other half a ‘despicable little rat’.

In true Gavin and Stacey fashion, though, all the chaos soon dies down, as the families are seen enjoying a drunken dance in Pam and Mick’s living room, with Smithy and Nessa getting especially close with some bumping and grinding.

So, does this mean they’re an item? Does this mean Smith said yes to Nessa’s proposal in 2019?

We’re bursting with excitement to find out…

Reacting to the trailer, fans of the comedy took to X to share their excitement.

‘Think I was more excited to see the preview of Gavin and Stacey than anything else on strictly’, joked emma_louise_95.

‘Gavin and Stacey last episode looks good, but I’m sad it’s the last one’, added WhovianLife.

Gavin and Stacey: The Finale airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Christmas Day.
