The house Brittany Murphy and her husband died in is up for sale after a huge refurbishment.

The Clueless actress died at the age of 32 in 2009 while her husband, screenwriter Simon Monjack, died under similar circumstances just five months later.

While officials declared her death was caused by pneumonia, anaemia and excessive use of prescription medications, much speculation has surrounded her and her husband’s sudden passing, with suggestions the house could have been haunted or addled with mould.

Murphy purchased the property for $3.85million from Britney Spears, and lived there for six years before her death in December 2009.

Now it’s being sold for $17,995,000 (£14,22,879) on Zillow after a ‘complete metamorphosis’, with the listing describing the six-bedroom property as a ‘private sanctuary’ with ‘breathtaking views’.

The 9,400 sqft house has nine bathrooms, as well as a pool, home theatre, and gym, and is being sold by David Parnes of Carolwood Estates, who starred in Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles.

The current owners purchased the property in 2020, and it was originally torn down and rebuilt in 2013.

There were reports from Murphy and Spears that the house – located on Rising Glen Road above the Sunset Strip – has something strange about it.

The Gimme More hitmaker’s former makeup artist Julianne Kaye remembered her early 2000s time in the house on an episode of the We Need to Talk About Britney podcast in February 2021.

‘[Spears] had that place up on Sunset Plaza — and I’m just gonna say, this is really weird … She calls me … I had my friend do reiki healing on her,’ Kaye explained.

‘He had come up; I guess she’d had a crazy partying weekend and needed to relax. He left, and she swears to God that he opened some spirit portal or something, and these bad spirits had come in … and they were trying to, like, push her down the stairs or something crazy.’

Kaye continued: ‘It was so bad that she left. She went to the Casa Del Mar hotel to stay there and never went back to the house. She goes, “I know you’re gonna think I’m crazy. I’m not crazy. I know what I saw. I know what I felt.”‘

Likewise, before his death, Simon recalled how Murphy ‘absolutely hated the Rising Glen house’ which she thought was ‘unlucky’, adding to The Hollywood Reporter: ‘Every time we would drive up Sunset, Brit would say, ‘Please, can we stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel?’

‘I’d say: “Honey, you’ve got to be realistic. We have our house, a 10,000-square-foot home. We’re going to stay in it.”‘

After Simon’s death, his mother Linda Monjack told Daily Mail in 2013 that her son had found ‘severe mould’ in the home, and that he had complained about having ‘hallucinations’ that things were ‘crawling out of his skin’.

However, the medical examiner’s office had already dismissed the mould theory in 2010 and his cause of death was recorded as almost identical to Murphy’s, with signs of pneumonia and anemia.

As an Investigation Discovery documentary titled Brittany Murphy: An ID Mystery was released in 2020, a forensic pathologist revealed he was still ‘puzzled’ by Murphy’s death.

Speaking to Fox News about the documentary, Wecht said about the original investigation: ‘What stood out to me was that here’s a young woman of 32 years old. How could she have developed such an advanced state pneumonia and such an incredible state of iron deficiency?

‘Where in the world was her mother, her husband? Why didn’t she receive proper medical care? I was just puzzled by all of it.’

He continued: ‘She had the financial means to see a doctor. And then she had prescriptions to strong opiates. It was very perplexing.’
