A series that was saved by Netflix has been cancelled for a second time.
First airing in 2021, the musical comedy Girls 5eva was created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey.
It follows four women – Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Philipps), Gloria (Paula Pell) and Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), who were part of a girl group in the early noughties before fading into obscurity after being one-hit wonders.
However, after a famous rapper sampled their song years later, they decide to reunite to try their luck in the music industry again.
The series holds a 97% rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, with each season being rated 98%, 95% and 100%.
When it first hit screens, fans said it was ‘clever, fresh and surprisingly funny’.

Another labelled it ‘the most original, clever, supremely funny show I’ve seen in a long time’.
The month after it was released the show was renewed for a second season, which then aired in 2022 and was just as acclaimed by critics and fans.
However, five months later broadcaster Peacock announced it was not renewing the series but it was then picked up by Netflix.
The third season was released in March this year but was unable to crack the streaming service’s Top 10 list.
Although it was still a critical success, this week it was revealed the show had again been cancelled.
One of the stars, Busy Philipps, said the show was now ‘dead’ (Picture: Heidi Gutman/ Peacock/ NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images)
The news was announced by star Busy, who said the show was ‘dead’.
‘If Netflix won’t, I will (say it’s over). I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts. I don’t know. I actually just don’t know,’ she said on her Doing Her Best podcast.
She later shared a post on Instagram, saying 2024 had been full of ‘heartbreak’.
‘I am forever grateful for this incredible show and these girls that became my sisters5eva, for Netflix giving us a chance to sing together a little bit longer and for everyone at Universal and Peacock who rooted so hard for our show,’ she wrote.
Sara Bareilles previously said she ‘absolutely’ wanted the show to return (Picture: Peacock Original)
‘And of course the genius of Meredith and Jeff and Eric and my patron saint Tina Fey. I honestly don’t know how or what I would be without this show and the endless joy it brought me in the darkest time of my life. I really really love what I do. and sometimes it feels almost impossible. anyway, isn’t that just like everything good in life? love you 5eva.’
The show’s creator previously told Decider she would have loved to work on another season.
‘I would like to see the story continue, assuming people watch it and love it,” she said, adding that she has “a notes app [full] of a bunch of ideas and things,’ she said.
Meanwhile star Sara said she ‘absolutely’ wanted the show to return but accepted it was ‘out of my hands and I’ve got to make peace with that’.
Metro has contacted Netflix for comment.
