Ahead of the release of the next season of a hit comedy series, Amazon Prime has made the first two available to watch for free.

First released in 2021, Harlem follows four girlfriends who met while attending New York University and are now in their thirties, living in Harlem.

It explores their efforts to balance ‘love, life, and their careers as working professionals’.

The series stars Meagan Good as Camille Parks, Grace Byers as Quinn Joseph, Shoniqua Shandai as Angie Wilson and Jerrie Johnson as Tye Reynolds, with Whoopi Goldberg also part of the cast.

Holding an impressive 98% rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, many viewers have shared their love of the show and what sets it apart.

‘Shows with the basic “friend group face career and romance problems in the city” can so easily be bland and tired… but this one is genuinely entertaining. It’s funny, it has specific and fresh storylines that go beyond the basic cliches in this genre, and the actors are all great and elevate it further. I didn’t expect to love it this much but got a lot of genuine out-loud laughs from it,’ user DK shared.

‘Loved this show, it was so relatable! Found myself rooting for all the characters. I had to binge watch it in a day because I just couldn’t stop watching. Definitely had laughs and even some tears watching,’ Avata posted.

‘This show is SO GREAT! Haven’t seen an all-female cast this great in a while. Love the strong friendships, plenty of laughs, just the right amount of drama. Great characters trying to live life the best way they can. Excellent cliff hangers at the ends of episodes. Can’t wait for season 3!’ Tam added.

After the second season aired in February 2022, it was renewed for a third at the end of last year.

It was then announced last month the next episodes would be arriving on January 23, 2025, following the cliffhanger last season ended on.

Before then, Amazon has uploaded the first two seasons onto its YouTube channel, with all episodes available to watch for free.

Many were delighted by the chance to watch the series, with many saying it alerted them to the existence of it too.

‘Can’t believe I have a Prime membership and I didn’t even KNOW about this show. Love the cast! Looking good already, can’t wait for Season 3! Lemme binge this real quick,’ user robyn_southafrica commented.

Speaking to Elle last year, the show’s creator, executive producer and showrunner Tracy Oliver spoke about how the characters could be ‘much-needed affirmations for women’.

‘It’s important for me to show the messiness because that’s real life. We often say things that we shouldn’t say, or because of our emotions, call or text things that we shouldn’t and then immediately regret it or feel embarrassed the next day,’ she said.

‘That messiness never really goes away. As you age, you become smarter but you’re still vulnerable to making mistakes and getting your feelings hurt and not always acting in your best interest.’

She continued: ‘What I’m trying to do through the show is subtly show that there is no right or wrong way to be a woman. Any choice that you decide to make that fulfils your personal goals and your personal happiness is right for you. It doesn’t matter what society has to say ultimately.’

Harlem is streaming on Amazon Prime and YouTube.
