The time has finally arrived – Squid Game season 2 is just around the corner.
It’s somehow already been three years since the South Korean TV series dropped on Netflix, quickly becoming a worldwide phenomenon when it launched in 2021.
Now the second outing is just days away, which will see the lead character Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) enter the deadly game once more while on a mission for revenge.
Fans might already be wondering if season 3 is on the cards in future as they prepare to endure emotional turmoil when they watch the latest episodes.
Here’s everything you need to know about the future of the groundbreaking drama.
Will there be a Squid Game season 3?
In July this year, months before the release of Squid Game season two, it was confirmed that the show had been renewed for a third and final season.

The announcement was made as the release date for season two was made official.
In a statement, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed his excitement for the future of the drama, having become a phenomenon following its debut in 2021.
‘I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season,’ he said in a letter addressed to fans.
When is Squid Game season 2 coming out?
There are mere days to go until Squid Game season two is released, as it’s due to drop on Netflix on Boxing Day.

Because what better way to bid farewell to the merry Christmas period than by watching one of the goriest programmes on TV?
While the first season had nine episodes, the second outing is due to be slightly shorter as a seven-parter, all of which are being released at the same time on the streaming platform.
What’s going to happen in Squid Game season 2?
At the very end of Squid Game, after Gi-hun won the prize and took home 45.6 billion Won (£24.9million), he was planning on getting on a plane to reunite with his daughter.
However, at the last minute he decided to turn around, insinuating that he was embarking on a path for revenge with his newly-secured fortune.
In the trailer for the second season, it’s revealed that Gi-hun asked the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who’s in charge of the game, to put him back in the running as a player once again.

A new group of players are introduced, and it’s confirmed that the first challenge that they have to face – which has lethal consequences if they fail – is completing the childhood game Red Light Green Light.
The teaser shows the lead character coaching the other players through the game and trying to help them survive – but of course, some don’t make it out alive.
Yet again, those participating in the game are all down on their luck and having to grapple with financial struggles in the real world, and so many of them are still desperate to stay even after they find out that they could die in the process.
Outside of the game, police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), whose older brother is the Front Man, is leading an operation to try and stop the game, but it’s uncertain at this point whether he’ll be successful.
The trailer ends with the Front Man concealed with his signature mask and hooded jacket, stating to Gi-hun: ‘Player 456. Welcome back to the game.’
What’s going to happen in Squid Game season 3 and when is it coming out?
While little is known about the third season of Squid Game at this time, Dong-hyuk has already dropped one tease about what fans can expect.
The Front Man’s identity was revealed at the end of season one (Picture: No Ju-han/Netflix)
‘The fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man’s] two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.’
So, two pieces of information – Gi-hun and Front Man’s battle will continue into season three, and the third outing will be coming out as soon as next year.
The reality TV series based on the show – Squid Game: The Challenge, which debuted in November 2023 – will also be making a return for a second season.
Squid Game is available to watch on Netflix.
