Coldplay star disputes Chris Martin’s claims the band will ‘retire’ soon-Lillie Rohan-Entertainment – Metro

Coldplay isn’t retiring anytime soon, at least according to one bandmate.

Chris Martin broke hearts everywhere in September when he announced the band is planning to retire after releasing 12 albums. Having just released their 10th, Moon Music, it gives fans at least a couple more years until that happens.

But now another member of the British rock group made up of vocalist Chris, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer and percussionist Will Champion, has hinted that may not be the case anymore.

Known for their visually impressive concerts and Grammy-winning hits, including Viva La Vida and Speed Of Sound, Coldplay have solidified themselves as one of the best-selling music acts of all time, so it came as no surprise news of their pending retirement was hugely upsetting to fans.

Thankfully, Guy, 46, has hinted they may have had a change of heart, claiming that Chris, 47, will ‘never stop writing’.

Sitting down with Rolling Stone, the Scottish musician said he and the band aren’t taking the frontman’s retirement plans seriously, and neither should fans: ‘Chris is never going to stop writing, so I kind of take it with a little bit of a pinch of salt.’

He continued: ‘We’re still years away from any kind of retirement. But I think you have to have a plan. If you’re running a marathon, you know you have to run 26 miles. But if somebody said to you, “OK, start running and just don’t stop,” it’s quite hard to motivate yourself.’

Chris announced that the group would likely take a permanent break after their 12th album earlier this year, telling NME: ‘The 12 album thing is very real, and it’s a nice feeling. It doesn’t mean we won’t tour or finish some compilation things or outtakes or whatever. It just means that the main story is told.’

He continued to say the decision is one that ‘feels really right’ and ‘supercharges’ the way the band are working now.

Coldplay are currently on the Music of the Spheres World Tour for their previous album of the same name, which will end next year in 2025.

The Scientist singers are due to perform at London’s Wembley Stadium next year on August 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, and 31, and September 3, 4, 7 and 8.

Coldplay first rose to fame in 2000 following the release of their debut album Parachutes, which featured the top-charting song, Yellow.

Earning them a Brit Award for British album of the year and a Grammy Award for best alternative music album, they continued their break out success with their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, in 2002, and once again, won a Brit award and Grammy.

In the years since, the band have gone from strength to strength, winning seven Grammy awards along the way, nine Brit awards, and selling over 100million albums worldwide.

They’ve also broken countless records, holding the record for most Brit Awards won by a band, having two of the highest-grossing tours of all time, and were the first group in Spotify history to reach 90m monthly listeners.

As well as their impact on music, the group have had a huge impact on climate as well, being named by Time magazine as one of the most influential climate action leaders in the world after their current tour reduced carbon emissions by 59% compared to their A Head Full of Dreams Tour which ran between 2016 and 2017.
